Men's Basketball Hangs On For 84-81 Win At Wilmington Saturday Afternoon

HTML BOX SCORE

WILMINGTON, Del. - The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team had three players record double-doubles and redshirt junior Karonn Davis (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends' Central (Niagara Univ.)) had a game-saving steal with three seconds left in regulation to lift the Huskies to an 84-81 victory at Wilmington University on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Bloomsburg snapped a two-game losing skid and improved to 3-2 on the young season. The Wildcats, meanwhile, dropped to 3-2 on the year.

Redshirt junior Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) poured in a game-high 28 points - his second consecutive 28-point effort - and added 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. The sharpshooter was 9-of-16 from the field and connected on six of his eight attempts from three-point range. With the outing, Mortellite moved to within 20 points of becoming the 29th player in school history to record 1,000 career points.

Junior Kyle-Michael Rose (Middletown, Del./Sanford School (Highland CC)) established career-highs in points (17) and rebounds (12) for his second double-double of the season. Junior Carnell McGirt (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic (Valley Forge Military Academy)) added 12 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the year. But, it was Davis' steal with three seconds left in regulation that helped the Huskies avoid a second-half collapse.

After Mortellite knocked down a triple with 12:56 left in regulation, the Huskies found themselves ahead by their largest margin of the afternoon, 67-44. But, the Wildcats battled back and, over the course of the next twelve-and-a-half minutes, pulled to within one, 82-81, thanks to a 37-15 spurt. An offensive foul against Mortellite with 19 seconds left gave the Wildcats the ball back with a chance to take the lead - a situation that the Huskies found themselves in during each of their two losses last weekend. But, Davis saved the game with a steal and then made a pair of foul shots at the other end to put Bloomsburg on the right side of a close, last-minute decision.

Bloomsburg jumped out quickly and took a 14-1 lead in the opening four minutes. Rose had eight points during the spurt while McGirt chipped in with four. The Huskies got the lead up to as many as 14 points in the first half after Mortellite hit his first of six triples and junior Khyree Hunt-Hawkins (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington (Baltimore City CC)) converted a layup for a 19-5 lead with 14:39 left in the opening half.

In a sign of things to come, Wilmington chipped away at the Huskies' double-digit lead and actually took a 35-34 lead - its only advantage of the game - with 4:55 left in the opening twenty minutes. But, a layup by Mortellite and a basket from redshirt freshman Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York (Le Moyne)) gave the visitors a three-point lead, 38-35, with 3:47 left in the half. The teams exchanged baskets the remainder of the half and Bloomsburg found itself leading, 45-40, at intermission.

Like the first half, Bloomsburg started hot in the second half and built its largest lead, 67-44, thanks to a 22-4 run in the opening seven minutes. Mortellite hit four three-pointers during the stretch and scored 12 of the team's 22 points during the run. Rose added six points during the stretch.

The Huskies still led by 18 - 72-54 - with 9:50 left in regulation before the Wildcats made their comeback attempt. Wilmington scored 27 of the game's next 37 points to set up the last-minute fireworks.

Mortellite's six three-pointers on Saturday tied his career-high that he set at West Chester on February 11, 2015. His 11 rebounds was two shy of his career-best of 13 he established against Kutztown on February 10, 2016.

Davis, the defensive hero, finished the game with nine points and a team-high four assists. His steal with three seconds left was his only steal of the game.

Bloomsburg shot 27-of-65 (41.5%) from the field and, thanks to Mortellite, was 8-of-17 (47.1%) from long range. The Huskies made only 22-of-34 (64.7%) from the foul line. Wilmington was slightly worse in all three shooting categories - 39.7% from the field, 26.3% from three-point range, and 62.1% from the foul line. The Huskies also held a 52-41 edge in rebounds.

Tyaire Ponzo-Meek led four Wildcats in double figures with 25 points.

Bloomsburg will next be in action on Saturday, December 3, when it travels to Mercyhurst University. Tipoff from the Mercyhurst Athletic Center is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
