PHILADELPHIA—Despite shooting more than 46 percent from the floor the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team fell to Philadelphia University, 57-48, on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.
Â
For the game the Huskies were 20-43 (46.5 percent), but turned the ball over 26 times which led to 18 points for the Rams.
Â
Both teams were cold coming out to start the game with the Huskies turning the ball over on each of its first three possessions, while the Rams missed on their first three shots. It wasn't until three minutes into play that the Huskies'
Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) hit a layup to get the scoring started. The teams then went back and forth for the remaining of the frame with Bloomsburg's biggest lead coming at 6-4, while Philadelphia opened its biggest lead of the quarter, 11-8, with 1:34 to go in the period.
Â
The Huskies rallied in the second period and regained the lead at 14-13 on a 3-pointer from
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic). Bloomsburg later pushed the lead to 20-17 a pair of free throws by
Morgan Klunk (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) with 4:27 to play in the second period. The Rams, though, tightened the defense and held the Huskies to just a bucket through the remainder of the half and closed on a 11-2 run to lead 28-22 at the break.
Â
Philadelphia started quickly in the third period outscoring the Huskies 8-0 through the two minutes to open its biggest lead of the game to that point at 34-22. Bloomsburg came storming back and got buckets from
Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick),
Alex Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), Casey Worley and Klunk to cut the deficit to 34-30 with 5:22 to go in the period and prompting a timeout by the Rams.
Â
Out of the timeout the Huskies got two free throws from Montana to make it 34-32 before the home team went on a 10-5 run over the final four minutes of the third period to lead 44-37 going to the final 10 minutes of play.
Â
The Rams, like in the third period, started quickly in the fourth going opening with a 7-0 run in the first minute to go up by 14 points, 51-37. Bloomsburg again rallied, and when Klunk scored on a fast break layup, it cut the margin to six points, 53-47, with 2:52 remaining and forcing another timeout by the Rams.
Â
But the Huskies would get no closer as the Rams hit on 4-6 from the free throw line in the final minutes and came away with the 57-48 win.
Â
Klunk led the Huskies, 1-4, with 12 points, while Ross and Corridoni scored nine points each. Philadelphia, now 3-3, had four players, Jackie McCarron, Erin Maher, Rachel Day and Alynna Williams score 12 points each.
