Defense Stands Tall In Football's 22-19 Win Over Shippensburg On Senior Day

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Redshirt sophomore Travis Krall (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area) blocked a potential game-tying 31-yard field goal with 2:05 left in regulation and redshirt senior Andrew Harris (Bethlehem, Pa./Whitehall) broke up a fourth-down pass attempt on Shippensburg's final bid at a comeback to lift the Bloomsburg University football team to a thrilling 22-19 victory over the visiting Red Raiders at a sun-drenched Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Huskies clinched a winning season for the 18th consecutive year as they improved to 6-4 overall and closed out the PSAC Eastern Division standings with a 4-3 mark. Shippensburg dropped to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the PSAC East.

The fireworks in the closing minutes started when the Huskies fumbled at their own 17 yard line with 4:21 left in regulation to give Shippensburg a golden opportunity to potentially take the lead in the closing minutes. But, a holding penalty against the Red Raiders on second down and a sack by redshirt sophomore Chris Gary (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) on third down forced the visitors to attempt the game-tying field goal. Krall, Bloomsburg's starting offensive right guard who stands six-foot-five, got his right forearm on the field goal attempt from Shippensburg's Billy Deane with 2:05 left in regulation to thwart the game-tying bid.

However, Shippensburg's defense forced a three-and-out on Bloomsburg's ensuing possession to give the Red Raiders one more shot to win or force overtime in the closing minute. Starting at its own 37 yard line, Gary was credited with a sack on the drive's first play which also resulted in an intentional grounding penalty to set up a second-and-16. Two plays later, on fourth-and-three from the Shippensburg 44, quarterback Landon Archangelo's pass appeared as if it would be complete to Jordan Harro for a first down. However, Harris' timing was perfect as he drilled Harro, jarring the ball free, and enabling the Huskies to hang on for the three-point win.

Bloomsburg's defense was tremendous the entire game as it allowed Shippensburg 306 total yards of offense, including just 93 through the air. The Huskies sacked Shippensburg quarterbacks Archangelo and Chase Yocum seven times and had two interceptions - both by Harris, who finished the game with a career-high tying 14 total tackles, one sack, one tackle for a loss, and two pass breakups to go along with his career-high two picks.

Gary finished the game with three sacks - two on Shippensburg's final five plays from scrimmage - which give him a PSAC-leading 12.5 this season. His 12.5 sacks are tied with Larry Webster (2013) for second-most in a single season in school history. He needs one to tie Webster's school record of 13.5 set during the 2012 campaign. It was also a breaking-out party for sophomore Frank Aigeldinger (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood), who finished the game with a career-best 12 total tackles (10 solo), three sacks, and three tackles for a loss. Aigeldinger's previous high in tackles was five at Lock Haven last week and he had never had a sack in his collegiate career prior to Saturday.

As excellent as the defense was, the Huskies struggled to move the ball against Shippensburg which came into the contest ranked 12th in the country in rushing defense (91.2) and 32nd in the country in total defense (328.4). Bloomsburg could muster only 13 first downs and 191 total yards of offense against the Red Raiders - 96 on the ground and 95 through the air. The 95 passing yards were the fewest in a game by the Huskies since accumulating only 71 passing yards in a 20-13 win at California (PA) on September 12, 2015.

Deane started the scoring when he drilled a 48-yard field goal to cap a 10-play drive with six minutes to go in the first quarter. But, the Huskies responded with a nine-play, 71-yard drive on their ensuing possession which was culminated by senior Lawrence Elliott Jr. (Utica, N.Y./Thomas R. Proctor)'s three-yard run. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Abbott (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School) added the extra point to give the Huskies a 7-3 advantage with 1:25 left in the first quarter.

Shippensburg cut the lead to 7-5 with 12:36 left in the second quarter when Nick Drawbaugh tackled Elliott Jr. in the endzone for a safety. Despite a 65-yard punt by senior Will Wagner (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) after the safety, the Red Raiders were able to tack on seven more points to take a 12-7 advantage, with 9:07 left in the first half, when Cole Chiappialle scored from a yard out with Deane adding the extra point.

But, Elliott Jr. put the Huskies back in front with an eight-yard touchdown run - his second of the game and 20th of the season - to give the Huskies a 13-12 margin with 2:18 left in the first half. Bloomsburg elected to go for two and Elliott Jr. scampered around the right end and went in untouched for a 15-12 Huskies' lead at halftime.

Yocum gave the Red Raiders the lead back when he called his own number and got into the endzone from one-yard out with 5:26 left in the third quarter. Deane added the extra point for a 19-15 Shippensburg advantage.

The score remained that way until the Huskies took advantage of a 16-yard punt by Deane which went out-of-bounds at the Shippensburg 33-yard line with 11:10 left in the fourth quarter. Four plays later, redshirt sophomore Duffy Gilhool (Upper Chichester, Pa./Chichester) connected with freshman Ethan Price (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) on a beautiful post-pattern from 20 yards out into the back left corner of the endzone with 9:05 left in regulation. Abbott added the extra point to make it a 22-19 Huskies' advantage.

The touchdown from Gilhool-to-Price also put the Huskies over 20,000 career points in program history which dates back to the 1892 season.

Shippensburg threatened on its ensuing possession but the drive stalled at the Bloomsburg 27 yard line, when Harris sacked Yocum for a 12-yard loss to the 39 on a third-and-two. The Red Raiders were forced to punt which led to the Bloomsburg fumble, the blocked field goal by Krall, and the pass breakup by Harris to close out the contest.

Elliott Jr. led the Huskies with 60 yards rushing and two scores on 17 carries. He also added four of Bloomsburg's nine receptions on the afternoon. With his 96 all-purpose yards on Saturday, he needs just one all-purpose yard at IUP next Saturday to become the fourth player in school history to reach 5,000 all-purpose yards for his career. He would join the elite trio of Huskies' running backs - Franklyn Quiteh (7,964 from 2010-13), Jamar Brittingham (6,867 from 2004-07), and Irv Sigler (5,264 from 1994-97). Elliott Jr. is, however, the only player in school history to have at least 500 yards in the four major categories (rushing, receiving, kickoff returns, punt returns).

Gilhool finished the day completing 9-of-19 passes for 95 yards and was picked off twice. But, his big touchdown pass to Price - his only catch of the day - proved to be the game-winner.

Yocum completed only 4-of-11 passes for 38 yards and was picked off twice but did lead the Red Raiders in rushing with 24 carries for 124 yards. Chiappialle had 71 rushing yards on 15 carries, 25 yards on four catches, 94 yards on four kickoff returns, and 35 yards on three punt returns to finish with 225 all-purpose yards. Archangelo was 5-of-12 for 55 yards passing.

Redshirt senior Jerrin Toomey (York, Pa./West York) added a career-high 12 tackles on Saturday to join Harris and Aigeldinger in double figures in tackles. Gary and Aigeldinger each had three sacks. Allen Holman and Tyler Emge led Shippensburg with nine tackles apiece.

The Huskies conclude the 2016 season on the road at IUP next Saturday, November 12. Kickoff from Frank Cignetti Field at George P. Miller Stadium is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
