Men's Basketball Snaps Three-Game Skid; Knocks Off Felician, 79-70, Sunday

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Redshirt junior Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) poured in a season-high 29 points to lift the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team to a 79-70 victory over Felician University on Sunday afternoon at the Nelson Field House. With the win, the Huskies snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 4-5 overall on the season. The Golden Falcons, meanwhile, fell to 6-7 on the year.

Mortellite's 29 points moved him into 23rd place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,075 career points. He jumped ahead of Jay DeShields (1998-02) on Sunday afternoon and needs seven points to pass Terry Conrad (1979-83) for 22nd place and 12 points to climb ahead of Larry Webster (2008-12) for the 21st spot on the program's all-time scoring leaderboard. Mortellite was only 9-of-23 shooting against the Golden Falcons, including 4-of-13 from three-point range, but was a perfect 7-of-7 from the foul line. He added six rebounds, two assists, one blocked shot, and one steal in the nine-point victory.

The Huskies also got another strong contribution from senior Donell Diggs (Washington, D.C./Takoma Academy (Prince George's CC)) who built off a season-high 19 points last Saturday at Clarion to finish with 16 points and a season-high eight assists on Sunday. Junior Carnell McGirt (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic (Valley Forge Military Academy)) added 11 points off the bench to also finish in double figures.

Bloomsburg never trailed in the contest and, when Diggs hit a runner in the lane 29 seconds into the game to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead, that also broke the only tie of the afternoon. Diggs and redshirt sophomore Darius Robinson-Wallace (Philadelphia, Pa./Delaware Valley Charter), who was making his first collegiate start, combined to score Bloomsburg's first nine points as the hosts jumped out to a 9-1 lead with 15:54 left in the first half.

After Felician cut the advantage to 9-5 with 14:49 left in the first half, the Huskies went on a 7-0 run courtesy of a three-pointer from Mortellite and four foul shots from Diggs to take their largest lead of the game, 16-5, with 13:29 left in the opening half. The Golden Falcons battled and got the Bloomsburg lead down to two points, 27-25, with 5:11 left in the first half before Mortellite hit another triple to extend the advantage to five points with 4:48 remaining. Bloomsburg finished out the half strong, scoring nine of the final fifteen points, to take a 39-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.

At the outset of the second half, the Golden Falcons would not go away and eventually cut the Huskies' lead to three points, 46-43, with 15:33 left behind the strong play from Gjaimeir Stanford who scored ten of Felician's 12 points during the stretch. But, Bloomsburg scored the next six points on baskets from senior Malik Sneed (Washington, D.C./Spingarn (Prince George's CC)), Robinson-Wallace, and Mortellite to get the advantage back up to nine, 52-43, with 13:58 left in regulation.

The Golden Falcons would hang around down the stretch but could get no closer than five points the rest of the way as the Huskies posted their first victory, in three tries, over their rivals from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).

Bloomsburg sealed the deal by hitting its final eight shots from the foul line. The Huskies finished the day going 22-of-26 from the charity stripe in the victory.

Mortellite's 29-point performance was the 28th time, in 61 career games, that he has surpassed 20 points in a game. He has also hit double figures in 45 of his last 47 contests. Diggs, meanwhile, has scored 35 points in his last two games after scoring 50 points over the first seven contests. His eight assists were two shy of his career-high of ten he recorded against Mansfield on December 19, 2015. It was McGirt's fifth double-digit scoring effort of the season.

Robinson-Wallace finished with seven points, one shy of his personal best, while Sneed had five points, seven rebounds, and tied a career-high with five blocked shots.

Stanford led three Golden Falcons in double figures with 24 points.

Bloomsburg will be off until Friday, December 30 when it heads to West Chester for the team's first contest against a divisional opponent. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
