HTML BOX SCOREWILLIAMSTON, N.C. – After being held to just one run on six hits in the season opener against Seton Hill on Friday, the Bloomsburg University baseball team exploded for 17 runs and cruised to a 17-0 victory over Indiana (PA) on Saturday morning at Riverside High School in Williamston, North Carolina. Both teams moved to 1-1 on the young season.
Â
Bloomsburg recorded a dozen hits in the victory, but also took advantage of six Crimson Hawk errors, nine walks, four hit batsmen, and six wild pitches en route to scoring at least one run in five of the seven innings on Saturday morning.
Â
Sophomore
Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) was the beneficiary of the Huskies' offense as he picked up his first victory of the year. Warren, who went 1-3 with a 7.24 earned run average last season, blanked IUP on five hits over six innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out four Crimson Hawks.
Â
After a scoreless first inning, Bloomsburg erupted for five unearned runs in the top of the second, all with two outs, to take a 5-0 advantage. The Huskies managed just one hit in the frame, but took advantage of four IUP miscues. The only hit of the inning came off the bat of sophomore
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township), who drove home a pair with a single to right field.
Â
Benson had a monster day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored, a home run, and a career-high six runs batted in. He previously drove in three runs on two different occasions as a rookie last season.
Â
Bloomsburg added four runs in the top half of the third inning to extend the lead. Redshirt sophomore
Cy Treaster (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) led off the inning with a double which was followed by a walk to senior
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, N.J./Paul VI) to put runners at first and second with nobody out. After IUP's Michael Klingensmith retired the next two Huskies, redshirt sophomore
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) doubled down the left field line to score Treaster for a 6-0 lead. Benson followed with a three-run blast to right field – his second collegiate home run – ballooning the lead to 9-0. Â
Â
Klingensmith finished his day by throwing 89 pitches in two and two-thirds innings. He allowed nine runs (four earned) on five hits, walked seven, and struck out four. He also uncorked four wild pitches to suffer his first loss of the season.
Â
The Huskies went quietly in the fourth but managed to tack on four more runs in the fifth to build a 13-0 advantage.
Â
Junior
Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) drove home the first run of the inning with an RBI double, scoring Edgette who led off the inning by reaching on an error. Then, after back-to-back strikeouts, Treaster laced his second double of the game, driving home Benson, who walked, and Muth for his first runs batted in of the season. Almand drove home the other run with an infield single, plating Treaster for a 13-0 margin.
Â
It became a 16-0 game in the top of the sixth as Bloomsburg added three more runs on a sacrifice fly from senior
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) and the first collegiate home run – a two-run shot – from freshman pinch-hitter
Joey Wrabel (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt).
Â
Benson drove home the final run of the game in the top of the seventh – his sixth RBI of the contest – with a sacrifice fly that scored redshirt freshman
Alex Castro (Paramus, N.J./Paramus ) who was hit by a pitch to start the frame.
Â
Sophomore
Mike Vranesich (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) preserved the shutout in the bottom of the seventh. The righthander allowed two hits and walk, but struck out two to finish off the Crimson Hawks.
Â
Benson, Muth, and Treaster led the Huskies with two hits apiece while Edgette and Benson each crossed the plate three times. All told, nine different Huskies had hits while 13 of the 14 position players who entered reached base at least once.
Â
Bloomsburg will play its third game in three days on Sunday when it takes on Pitt-Johnstown. First pitch is scheduled for 9:00 a.m.
