Women’s Basketball Drops 55-53 Decision To Cheyney On Saturday

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – It was a tale of two halves for the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team and, unfortunately, the Huskies' first half was two points worse than Cheyney's second half as the Wolves came-from-behind to stun Bloomsburg, 55-53, on Saturday afternoon at the Nelson Field House.

The loss was Bloomsburg's sixth in the last seven games as it dropped to 13-12 overall and 10-11 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. Cheyney, meanwhile, won for the third time in the last four games and improved to 4-20 overall and 3-18 in league play.

Redshirt senior Adreana Sadowski (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) was honored before the contest as Saturday was the final regular season home game for the Huskies. Sadowski did not disappoint the home crowd as she finished with a game-high 25 points, on 10-of-18 from the field, grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, and blocked six shots on the afternoon.

Bloomsburg held a 30-18 lead at halftime, limiting the Wolves to just 20.0% shooting from the floor in the opening twenty minutes. However, Cheyney outscored the Huskies, 37-23, in the second half as Bloomsburg went ice cold from the field, making only 6-of-28 in the final twenty minutes.

The game started slowly as Bloomsburg outscored Cheyney, 11-8, in the opening quarter with both teams combining to shoot 7-of-31 from the field. Sadowski got off to a blistering start, however, posting six points, six rebounds, and three blocks in the opening ten minutes.

Bloomsburg started the second quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 19-8 lead with 7:11 left in the first half. Cheyney stopped the bleeding, momentarily, scoring six consecutive points to cut the Huskies' lead to 19-14 with 3:50 left. But, the Huskies responded by scoring 11 of the final 15 points of the half to take a 12-point lead to the locker room.

Sadowski hit a pair of free throws to start the third quarter as Bloomsburg built its biggest lead of the game at 32-18. After the redshirt senior converted a layup with 8:20 left, Cheyney began to chip away and outscored the Huskies, 14-4, over the final 8:20 to cut the Bloomsburg lead to four, 39-35, entering the fourth quarter.

Sadowski scored eight of Bloomsburg's nine points in the third with freshman Alyssa Mack (Walnutport/Allentown Central Catholic) scoring the other Husky point on a 1-for-2 trip to the foul line with 16 seconds left in the quarter.

Bloomsburg would stretch the lead to five after junior Alex Ross (Lancaster/Manheim Township) nailed a three-pointer from the corner with 8:33 left in regulation. However, Cheyney battled back to take its first lead since a 6-5 advantage in the first quarter when Shania Stamper banked in a three-pointer to give the visitors a 48-46 lead with 4:42 left.

The Huskies trailed by four with 3:54 left before junior Morgan Klunk (Felton/York Catholic) hit two free throws and Mack nailed a three-pointer to reclaim a one-point lead, 51-50, with 3:08 left. Cheyney answered with three straight points before Klunk tied the game, on two free throws, at 53-53 with 44 seconds left.

Cheyney gave Bloomsburg ample opportunities down the stretch, but the Huskies could not convert. Adriene Small gave the Wolves a one-point lead with a free throw with 35 seconds left. The Wolves missed four of their six foul shot attempts over the final 35 seconds, but the Huskies could not get a shot to fall. When Klunk's jumper attempt at the buzzer caromed off the rim, Cheyney escaped with the two-point win.

Mack also finished in double figures, chipping in 12 points in 27 minutes off the bench. Sadowski and Mack combined to score 37 of the Huskies' 53 points and went 14-of-28 from the field. The rest of the team shot 3-of-27.

Klunk finished with seven points (all at the foul line), seven rebounds, and five assists, while Ross added added four points, eight rebounds, and a career-high seven helpers.

Kyra Hines-Allen led the Wolves with 16 points and eight rebounds. Aerie DeJesus and Amber Genwright chipped in ten points apiece.

Bloomsburg will play its final game of the regular season on Wednesday, February 24 when it travels to Shippensburg for a 6:00 p.m. start.
