Game 2 Box ScoreBLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team played at Danny Litwhiler Field for the first time in the 2016 regular season, but ran into the 15th-ranked Warriors of East Stroudsburg who handed the Huskies a pair of losses for the second consecutive afternoon. East Stroudsburg held off a furious Bloomsburg comeback bid in game one, hanging on for an 11-8 win, and then blanked the Huskies, 9-0, in the nightcap. Bloomsburg fell to 10-9 overall and 0-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division while East Stroudsburg improved to 19-2 overall and 4-0 in league play.
In the opener, the Warriors jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings against senior righthander
Alex Carpenter (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport), who lasted just an inning and two-thirds in his third start of the season. He allowed six runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out two.
East Stroudsburg did its damage in the first inning with two outs. Matt Walewski drove home the game's first run with a single through the right side, scoring Ian Allen who had a one-out hit. Casey Saverio followed with a two-run double to cap off the three-run first inning. Robert Bennie extended the visitors' lead to 4-0 with a solo home run to lead off the second. Then, after Carpenter got two outs in the inning, Walewski drew a walk to extend the inning and Christian Rishel doubled down the left field line to drive home two, ballooning the lead to 6-0. The hit by Saverio ended the afternoon for Carpenter, who gave way to sophomore
Zach Newmyer (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land).
Bloomsburg got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the third against East Stroudsburg starter, Ian Allen. Redshirt sophomore
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a free pass to junior
Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland). Edgette stole third and was able to score when the throw from East Stroudsburg catcher, Steven Zimmerman, sailed into left field. Muth advanced to third on a single by senior
Ryan Kirman (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) and scored when senior
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) lifted a sacrifice fly to right. Freshman
Tristan Kevitch (Ardmore, Pa./Harriton) plated the Huskies' third run of the frame with an RBI single to score Kirman.
The Huskies came all the way back to tie the game at 6-6 with a three-run fourth inning. Sophomore
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) led off with a double and Edgette drew a walk to put runners at first and second with nobody out. Two batters later, Kirman drilled a three-run home run to left field, his tenth round tripper of the season, to end the afternoon for Allen and to knot the game at 6-6.
The Warriors came back with two in the top of the fifth against Newmyer. But, in the bottom of the sixth, Kirman did it again, hammering a two-run home run to center field - his second of the game and 11th of the season - to tie the game at 8-8.
However, East Stroudsburg scored three times in the seventh - two coming on a home run from Rishel - and the Huskies could not mount a third comeback as the Warriors took game one.
Kirman finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two home runs, and five runs batted in to pace the Huskies' offense. Benson also had three hits while Kevitch and freshman
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) had two hits apiece.
Newmyer was saddled with the loss as he dropped to 2-2 on the season. He went four and one-third innings and allowed four runs on five hits. He walked seven and struck out three. Freshman
Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) allowed a run on two hits in the seventh.
Five Warriors finished with two hits in game one while Ben Bortz, who came on with two outs in the sixth, improved to 2-0 with the victory out of the pen.
The Huskies could muster just three hits in game two against East Stroudsburg starter Brandon Holup. Holup went the distance, walking four and striking out 11 Bloomsburg batters.
Casselberry had two of Bloomsburg's three hits while Edgette had the other.
Redshirt junior
Ryuta Amaike (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) got the ball in the nightcap and allowed five runs (three earned) in five innings. He walked four and struck out four to drop to 0-3 on the season.
East Stroudsburg scored twice in the second and once in the third to take a 3-0 lead after three. The Warriors tacked on another run in the fifth and broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning.
Sophomore
Mike Vranesich (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) and freshman
Wyatt Beakler (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) combined to allow four of the runs in the sixth inning. Sophomore
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) made his first appearance of the season on the mound and struck out the side in the seventh, pitching around a two-out walk.
The Warriors spread the wealth again in game two as five players collected two hits apiece.
Bloomsburg will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday, March 23, when it travels to Philadelphia to take on the University of the Sciences for a non-conference twinbill. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
