Game 2 Box ScoreLOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Senior
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) homered in both games and redshirt sophomore
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) continued his torrid streak at the plate with five hits as the Bloomsburg University baseball team swept a doubleheader at Lock Haven on Friday afternoon. The Huskies took game one by a 9-5 final and then completed the sweep with a 4-2 victory in the night cap to improve to 16-10 overall and 5-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. The Bald Eagles fell to 13-12 overall and 5-5 in the PSAC East.
Bloomsburg has now won four straight and six of its last seven since dropping all four games to East Stroudsburg to begin conference play on March 18 and March 19.
Casselberry homered in both games and now has four home runs over the last six games after starting the season with one round tripper in the first 20 contests. He finished the afternoon with four runs batted in and has taken over the team lead in that department with 37.
Meanwhile, Edgette went 5-for-8 with three runs scored and four RBI in the sweep and is now batting a team-high .452 on the season. He extended his hitting streak to 15 consecutive games and is 31-of-54 (.576) during the streak to increase his batting average from .279 to .452.
The Huskies scored two runs in each of the first two innings of game one to take a 4-0 advantage in support of sophomore righthander
Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional).
Edgette started the first inning with a one-out double down the right field line. Then, with two outs, senior
Ryan Kirman (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) drove home Edgette with a double to left center to get the Huskies on the board. Junior
Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) followed with another double to plate Kirman for a 2-0 lead. Run-scoring singles from sophomore
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) and Edgette in the second inning gave the Huskies a 4-0 advantage against Lock Haven starter, Parker Watson.
The Bald Eagles got a run back in the bottom of the second when Nick Stotler drilled a one-out home run to left off Warren.
After both teams went quietly in the third, Bloomsburg broke the game open with five runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-1 lead. Senior
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, N.J./Paul VI) started the rally with a single and advanced to third when a sacrifice bunt from Woelfel was misplayed. Sophomore
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) followed with a sacrifice fly to left to plate Almand for a 5-1 lead. Edgette drove home Woelfel with an RBI single and Casselberry launched a two-run home run to left center to give the Huskies an 8-1 edge. Two batters later, Muth hit a solo shot off of Watson to end the Bald Eagle starter's afternoon and finish the scoring in the inning.
Lock Haven got an RBI double from Jamie Eshelman in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 9-2. Then, in the bottom of the sixth, the Bald Eagles plated three runs on a two-run home run from Evan Moore and a solo shot from Evan McFarland for the final margin.
Sophomore
Zach Newmyer (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) pitched the seventh and allowed only a one-out single while striking out two.
Warren got the victory to improve to 4-2 on the season. He went six innings and allowed five runs on ten hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out one. The three home runs he allowed were the first three he had given up all season (37 innings). Watson suffered the loss for Lock Haven to fall to 2-3 on the year. He allowed nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits in 3.2 innings. Aaron Lidgett allowed only one Bloomsburg hit - a leadoff single by Benson in the sixth - in 3.1 innings.
Edgette went 3-for-4 with two runs and two runs batted in. Muth had two hits and two RBI.
Game two was more of a pitchers' duel as Bloomsburg redshirt sophomore
Zach Meyer (Muncy Valley, Pa./Sullivan County) took the mound against Lock Haven's Mike Anthony.
Neither team could crack the scoreboard until the Huskies touched up Anthony for four runs in the top of the fifth inning - all with two outs - to take a 4-0 lead. Woelfel started the two-out rally with a single and moved to second when Benson was hit by a pitch. After a wild pitch advanced both runners 90 feet, Edgette singled through the left side of the infield to score both Woelfel and Benson for a 2-0 lead. Casselberry followed with a two-run blast to left - his second of the afternoon and fifth of the season - to give the Huskies a 4-0 advantage.
However, in the bottom of the sixth, the Bald Eagles finally solved Meyer and cut into the Bloomsburg lead with a pair of runs. Justin Sleigh scored on a wild pitch for the first run and McFarland singled to cut the lead to 4-2.
But, Meyer got out of the jam and pitched around a two-out error in the seventh to preserve the victory.
The righthander improved to 2-2 on the season as he allowed two runs on six hits. He did not issue a walk and struck out three. Meanwhile, Anthony suffered his first loss of the season (4-1) for the Bald Eagles, allowing four runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out three.
Edgette was the only player on either side to have more than one hit. He went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.
The teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon at Danny Litwhiler Field. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
