Game 2 Box ScoreBLOOMSBURG, Pa. - First – the good news. The Bloomsburg University baseball team scored 16 runs in a Saturday doubleheader against #2-ranked Millersville at Litwhiler Field. Now, the bad. The Marauders totaled 25 of their own in 15-9 and 10-7 victories to complete a four-game weekend sweep. Millersville improved to 35-3 overall and 18-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East while the Huskies, losers of eight straight, dropped to 20-18 and 7-13 respectively.
Senior
Ryan Kirman (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional), in game one, belted his team-leading 15th home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning. The home run, to straightaway center field, broke Bloomsburg's school-record for most home runs in a single season. Former Major League pitcher, and Bloomsburg Hall of Famer, Matt Karchner, held the previous record of 14 during the 1989 season.
In the opener, the Huskies staked senior starter
Alex Carpenter (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) to an early lead thanks to a three-run second. Bloomsburg got an RBI single - a pop-up that dropped harmlessly in front of home plate - from freshman designated hitter
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) and a two-run, inside-the-park, home run to left by senior second baseman
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, N.J./Paul VI).
But, Millersville knocked out Carpenter (3-1) with a four-run third and was never headed thereafter. The Marauders bunched a pair of doubles with three singles and a hit batsman to take the lead. Then, Millersville kept the pressure on with four more in the fourth, two in the fifth, four in the sixth, and a solo tally in the seventh. Mitch Stoltzfus and Ben Snyder hit two-run blasts in the fourth while Dan Stoltzfus hit a two-run shot to right in the fifth. Millersville used five singles and a free pass for its damage in the sixth. The Marauders' final run came in the seventh on a single, two wild pitches, and an infield grounder.
Bloomsburg's offense produced single runs in the fifth and sixth and four more in the seventh in a last gasp.
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) had a run-producing single in the fifth, Kirman hit his home run in the sixth, while Edgette, Kirman, and
Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) collected run-scoring singles in the Huskies' last at-bat with Kirman plating a pair.
Carpenter allowed four runs and seven hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) allowed two hits in 1.2, walked four, hit a batter, and allowed five runs.
Logan Zavada (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) was touched for seven hits and six runs in three innings of work. Edgette and Kirman combined to go five-for-seven at the plate with four runs scored and five RBIs.
Millersville starter Jim McDade (7-0) went five innings for the win, allowing four runs and six hits. Three relievers mopped up.
The nightcap developed into a pitcher's duel between Millersville's Reid Anderson (6-0) and Bloomsburg's
Ryuta Amaike (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) (1-4). The Marauders got on the board first when Dan Neff hit a third-inning sacrifice fly. The Huskies tied it in the fourth on a run-producing single by freshman designated hitter
Tristan Kevitch (Ardmore, Pa./Harriton). A two-out Milersville error kept the inning alive.
The Marauders took the lead for good with a pair in the fifth thanks to a walk, two doubles, and an infield miscue.
Both starting pitchers were replaced in the seventh and the floodgates opened. When the dust settled, the teams combined for 13 runs – seven by the Marauders – a dozen hits, and five walks. The Marauders smacked four doubles and a triple among their six seventh-inning-hits against Bloomsburg relief pitcher
Zach Newmyer (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land).
Millersville opted to bring in Cody Stoneback to close the game, but the lanky righthander couldn't get anyone out. Neither could his successor, Matt Ulrich. The duo gave up a combined six runs. They allowed only three hits combined but walked three and threw a wild patch. Enter Logan Grant, who allowed three more hits, but left the bases loaded by getting Almand on a roller to third to end the contest.
Amaike allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings of work.
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) joined Kevitch with two hits apiece.
Edgette singled in his final at bat in the seventh and now enjoys a 10-game hitting streak. He's had at least one hit in 26 of his last 27 games. Although the Huskies defense made five errors in the doubleheader, the miscues caused only one Millersville run to be unearned.
Bloomsburg will try to get back into the win column Friday, April 22, when it entertains PSAC East-rival Kutztown. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Bloomsburg won a pair of games over Kutztown at the Builder Invitational, hosted by the Newport News Apprentic School in late February, by the scores of 20-1 and 17-10.
