LOCK HAVEN BOX SCORE
QUAKERTOWN--Bloomsburg University bounced back from a defeat in its first game on Friday to beat Lock Haven, 3-2, to advance to the finals of the PSAC Championships. The Huskies had dropped their opening game of the day to California (PA), 9-6, in eight inninngs. Bloomsburg will get a rematch with the Vulcans on Saturday starting at noon. The Huskies will need to win twice on Saturday to claim its first PSAC title since 2010.
Marissa Shelhamer (Nescopeck, Pa./Central Columbia) was the hitting star in game two for Bloomsburg going 2-3 with a run scored and a homer.
GAME ONE
In game one the Huskies jumped out to a first inning lead for the third straight game. Freshman
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) led off the game with a double to left center.
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) then hit a long home run to left field giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
California got on the board in the top of the third inning scoring four times on three hits and taking advantage of one costly error. The runs were the first of the tournament surrendered by the Huskies.
Bloomsburg came back and regained the lead in bottom of the fourth inning scoring four times.
Natalie Quinlan (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) drew a one out with
Abbey Remley (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) coming in to pinch run.
Valerie Carcasses (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) tehn beat out a bunt attempt putting runners at first and second. After a pop out, Mayhew hit a long doule to left that just missed going out with Remley scoring and Carcasses stopping at third. Parker then drilled an opposite field, three-run homer to right that easily cleared the fence giving Bloomsburg a 6-4 lead.
Cal threatened in the fifth drawing two walks from
Sarah Bortner (Glenville, Pa./South Western), but the junior right-hander got a fly out to center to keep it a 6-4 game. The Huskies had a scoring chance in the fifth getting runners at first and second with one out, but a foul out and a line out to left kept it a two-run game.
In the top of the seventh the Huskies were three outs from advancing. The Vulcans got a lead single followed by a double to left putting runners at second and third with no outs. Bortner got a ground out to short with the runners holding. A single up scored one run and put runners at the corners. A fly out to left then plated the tying run with the Cal baserunner beating the throw home to tie the score at 6-6.
Bloomsburg was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh forcing extra innings. In the top of the eighth Cal, with one out, had two runners reach on back-to-back errors. After a ground out moved the runners to second and third, Natalya Smarra hit a three-run homer to right field giving the Vulcans a 9-6 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh the Huskies got one runner on, but Cal got a ground out to end the game.
Bortner took the loss and falls to 13-6 on the year. Mayhew went 3-5 and drove in three runs, while Parker was 2-3 and drove in three runs.
GAME TWO
In game two the Huskies, for the fourth straight game, scored in the first inning.
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) reached on an error by the shortstop who dropped her pop up in shallow left field. Mayhew then beat out a bunt to put runners at first and second. After a fly to right moved Winkelman to third,
Anna McElroy (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) singled to left field scoring Winkelman making it 1-0.
in the top of the second, with one out,

Valerie Carcasses (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) had back-to-back singles. A ground out moved the runners to second and third before Lock Haven's Bekah Slattery got a pop out to end the at-bat.
Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) was strong in the circle in the second inning retiring Lock Haven in order. In the top of the third Parker led off the inning with a long home run, her third of the tournament, to put the Huskies up 2-0.
In the top of the fourth the Huskies made it 3-0. Shelhamer, making her first start of the tournament, led off the inning with a towering shot to left ceneter that cleared the fence by 30 feet. Meanwhile, Tomaschik was in control of the game not allowing a hit through four innings.
In the bottom of the fifth Lock Haven got its first hit off Tomaschik when Rachel Mouillesseaux hit a solo shot leading off the inning to make it 3-1.
Lock Haven threatened in the bottom of the sixth. Faith Creely led off with a bloop double down the left field line. After a foul out, Winkelman made a great running catch at the fence on a long fly that saved a run. After a walk put runners at the corners, Bortner came in to relieve Tomaschik. Michele Holweger greeted Bortner with a bloop single to center scoring a run and making it 3-2. Mouillesseaux was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. But Bortner eascped the jam by getting a pop up to second.
Bloomsburg got a runner to second with one out in the top of the seventh, but two fly outs ended the inning for the Huskies.
Lock Haven got the go-ahead run to the plate with two outs, but Bortner closed out the game with a pop up to second.
Tomaschik got her 15th win of the year against no losses with Bortner getting her fifth save.
