Baseball Swept At Shippensburg Saturday To Close Out Regular Season

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team, for the second consecutive day, suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Shippensburg University on Saturday afternoon. The Raiders took game one by a 7-0 final before completing the sweep with an 11-4 victory over the Huskies in the nightcap. Bloomsburg concluded the regular season with a 23-23 overall record and a 10-18 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. The Raiders, meanwhile, clinched the fourth playoff spot in the east and closed out the regular season with a 25-25 overall record and a 14-14 mark in league play.

Senior Alex Carpenter (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) took the mound for the final time in his collegiate career in game one. The hosts greeted him rudely, scratching across a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Huskies, that would be all Shippensburg starter Marcus Shippey would need. Shippey hurled a five-hit shutout to improve to 5-4 on the season. He did not walk a batter and struck out six.

After the rough start by Carpenter, the senior righthander settled down nicely as he fired goose eggs at Shippensburg for the next three innings to keep the Huskies in the contest. However, the Raiders broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-0 advantage.

Sophomore Zach Newmyer (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) pitched a perfect sixth inning in relief of Carpenter, who went five innings and allowed seven runs (four earned) on ten hits. He walked one and struck out two to close out the year with a 4-3 record.

Senior Joey Casselberry (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) had two of Bloomsburg's five hits while senior Brian Almand (Haddon Township, N.J./Paul VI), redshirt freshman Brandyn Smith (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff), and freshman Joey Wrabel (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) had the others.

The Huskies struck first in game two with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Casselberry doubled, senior Ryan Kirman (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) singled to bring home Casselberry, and Almand doubled to plate Kirman. But, the Raiders responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half against redshirt junior, Ryuta Amaike (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall), to tie the contest at 2-2.

Amaike was pulled after going two innings as the Huskies used multiple pitchers in the final game.

Bloomsburg took the lead in the top of the third inning on an RBI double from Casselberry. The Huskies scored their other run on a solo shot from Kirman in the top of the sixth - his 16th home run of the season - which extended his school record for most home runs in one year.

The Huskies used four pitchers to close out the game - each throwing one inning. Sophomore Mike Vranesich (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo), freshman Jeremy Zezza (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area), junior Chad Bronson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill), and senior Sean McCloskey (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) finished out the afternoon. Zezza was saddled with the loss to drop to 0-1 on the season. He allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit in his inning. Meanwhile, it was Bronson's first appearance of the season.

Casselberry paced the offense, again, with three hits in four trips. Kirman added two hits in the loss.

Bloomsburg's 23 victories were nine more than last season's yotal (14-22)  and were the most since the Huskies won 28 games during the 2014 campaign.
