FIVE THINGS TO WATCH
- Bloomsburg will be looking to avenge a 27-10 season-opening loss to Stonehill a year ago. It marked the Huskies' first loss in a season opener since 2010 (24-14 at Ashland) and first loss in a season opener at home since a 47-37 loss to New Haven in 1999.
- Redshirt junior
Chris Palubinsky (Ringtown, Pa./Shenandoah Valley) will be making his first collegiate start at quarterback for the Huskies. He has completed 7-of-11 passes for 67 yards and one touchdown in his first three seasons on the roster (redshirted in 2013).
- Bloomsburg has rattled off 17 consecutive winning seasons and 17 consecutive seasons of seven or more victories. Only Division I's Florida State (31) and Virginia Tech (23), Division II's Northwest Missouri State (19), and Division III's Mount Union (27) have longer streaks in all of college football. Boise State and Oklahoma have streaks equal to that of Bloomsburg's.
-
Lawrence Elliott Jr. (Utica, N.Y./Thomas R. Proctor) returns for his senior season after rushing for 1,447 yards and 10 touchdowns last year. The Huskies have now had a 1,000-yard rusher in six straight seasons and in 12 of the last 13 years.
- Stonehill head coach Eli Gardner will be making his collegiate head coaching debut. The Skyhawks, like the Huskies, went 7-4 in 2015.
FROM THE ARCHIVES (by BU Archivist, Bob Dunkelberger)
- The Huskies have won 10 of 13 season openers dating back to 2003, with an all-time record in 118 seasons from 1892 to 2015 of 55-59-4. Their record at home is 41-18-3 and on the road 14-41-1. The first road win in school history in a season opener after nine consecutive losses was at Kutztown in 1928. The most recent one was at Stonehill in 2014.
Â
- The first game this season is on a Friday. Bloomsburg's all-time record on Friday's is an even 21-21-1, with a home record of 17-10-1 and 4-11 on the road. The first Friday game in school history was played in 1905 and the most recent in 2012 at Stonehill. The four all-time road wins on Fridays have come in 1952 at Lock Haven and in the last three Friday games overall: 1997 at Wayne State, 2004 at Slippery Rock, and the 2012 Stonehill contest. The Huskies have not lost a Friday game since 1988 at West Chester, when Danny Hale was still head coach of the Golden Rams.
Â
- Bloomsburg has scored in 151 consecutive games dating back to 2003 and 10 or more points in 72 straight contests since 2010, both school records. The previous records were, respectively, 55 games from 1993 to 1998 and 53 from 1998 to 2003.
Â
- Head coach
Paul Darragh has won 28 games in his first three seasons as head football coach - already the sixth highest total in school history. The five coaches still ahead of him are Danny Hale (173), Albert Aldinger (50), Robert Redman (38), Pete Adrian (36), and John Weimer (32).
Â
- The Huskies all-time record in 79 games versus out-of-state teams is 43-34-2, with a home record of 25-10-1 and an 18-24-1 mark on the road. The first game ever with an out-of-state team was at home in 1932 with Oswego of New York, and the following year the first ever out-of-state road trip was to Oswego. Bloomsburg is 6-2 all-time against teams from the state of Massachusetts, with 3-1 records versus both Stonehill and American International.
