Yahmir Greenlee (Philadelphia, Pa./Boys Latin), the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday night with a 98-92 setback at 13th-ranked Kutztown University. The Huskies dropped to 9-7 overall and 5-7 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division while the Golden Bears improved to 14-2 overall and 10-2 in league play.
Mortellite, the PSAC's second-leading scorer entering Wednesday night's action, poured in a game-high 28 points while adding five assists, four rebounds, and three steals. He hit 5-of-10 from three-point range and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the foul line. Greenlee, meanwhile, posted a career-high 25 points on 8-of-12 from the field and 6-of-6 from the foul line. He also added five assists.
Junior
Carnell McGirt (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic (Valley Forge Military Academy)) was reinserted into the starting lineup on Wednesday and added 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.
Bloomsburg got off to a fast start as it built up an early six-point advantage, 14-8, with 15:21 left in the opening half. Greenlee had eight of the team's 14 points during the spurt. But, Kutztown went on a 9-2 run over the next two minutes to take a 17-16 advantage after Ryan Connolly hit a three-pointer with 13:16 left in the first half.
Kutztown continued to pour it on and got its lead up to as many as ten points, 34-24, with 5:45 left in the first half before settling for a 44-38 lead as the teams headed to their respective locker rooms for halftime.
Greenlee, McGirt, and senior
Donell Diggs (Washington, D.C./Takoma Academy (Prince George's CC)) each had eight points in the first half to lead the Huskies. Connolly had a dozen points to pace the Golden Bears.
Bloomsburg, which has been a second-half team in recent games, start the final twenty minutes on a 13-0 run to erase the six-point halftime deficit and to take a 51-44 lead with 16:56 left. Mortellite and Greenlee each had five points during the run. Connolly ended the Huskies' run with a three-pointer before the Huskies went on another 7-0 run to extend their lead to 11 points, 58-47, with 15:18 remaining. Mortellite had five of the seven points.
But, Kutztown responded with a 10-0 run to cut Bloomsburg's advantage to 58-57 with 13:53 left in regulation. McGirt, however, stopped the run with a layup and Greenlee hit one of his three triples on the night to get the lead back up to six, 63-57, with 13:08 left.
Again, the Golden Bears answered - this time with a 12-2 run to erase the six-point Bloomsburg lead and to take a four-point advantage, 69-65, with 10:16 remaining. It would be a lead that Kutztown would never relinquish.
The hosts got the lead up to as many as nine points later in the half and the Huskies got as close as four points but could never get over the hump. The Golden Bears scored their final 14 points from the foul line as Kutztown was able to ice the game by going 14-of-18 from the charity stripe over the final 2:18.
