Women's Basketball Has Three-Game Winning Streak Snapped Saturday Afternoon

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Despite a season-high 21 points from senior Alex Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon with a 75-55 setback to visiting East Stroudsburg University at the Nelson Field House. Bloomsburg dropped to 4-13 overall and 3-10 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division while the Warriors improved to 10-7 overall and 6-7 in league play.

Ross was the only Huskies' player in double figures and was one point shy of her career-high of 22 points she set at Kutztown on January 9, 2016. The senior added five rebounds and a team-high five assists. Senior Morgan Klunk (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) finished with eight points and a team-best eight rebounds while freshman Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) also chipped in with eight points.

On the game's first possession, East Stroudsburg's Jordan Hertz buried a three-pointer and the Warriors would never relinquish the lead the remainder of the contest. The visitors, who built a 28-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, came out of the gates blazing as they shot 12-of-18 from the field and 4-of-7 from three-point range. East Stroudsburg's Imani Brown nearly outscored the Huskies by herself in the opening quarter as she had 14 of her team-high 18 points in the opening ten minutes.

Things settled down in the second quarter and the Huskies got back into the game by starting the period on a 8-2 run to cut the East Stroudsburg lead to seven, 30-23, with 4:36 left in the opening half. But, Bloomsburg was outscored, 10-4, the rest of the frame and trailed, 40-27, at the intermission.

Both teams started slowly after the break as a Ross three-pointer with 7:41 left in the third proved to be the first points scored for either team in the second half. The triple cut the lead to 40-30 but the Warriors went on a 9-0 run and, after a pair of free throws from Noelle Powell, built the lead to 49-30 with 4:03 left in the quarter. It didn't get any better for the Huskies as the East Stroudsburg lead grew to as many as 24 points late in the frame before a Ross layup with 35 seconds left cut the deficit to 58-36 after three quarters.

The Huskies, who staged a miraculous comeback on Wednesday at Kutztown, did not have that magic for the second straight game. Bloomsburg did cut the lead to 17 after Ross hit her second three-pointer of the game with 4:39 left but could get no closer.

The Warriors started hot and, unfortunately for the Huskies, never cooled off. East Stroudsburg shot 30-of-56 (53.6%) from the field and hit 7-of-16 from long range (43.8%). East Stroudsburg also outrebounded Bloomsburg, 34-26. The Huskies, on the flip side, shot just 19-of-52 (36.5%) from the floor and 4-of-14 from three-point land (28.6%).

Powell finished with 17 while Rachel Falkowski added 11 to join Brown in double figures for the Warriors.

The Huskies will look to get back on track on Wednesday, January 25, when they travel to Lock Haven University. Start time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
