CHEYNEY, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team made all 17 of its foul shots in the second half - 21-of-22 for the game - as it completed a season sweep of Cheyney University with a 73-63 victory at Alfred Cope Hall. With the win, the Huskies improved to 11-8 overall and 7-8 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division while the Wolves dropped to 2-17 overall and 2-13 in league play.
Redshirt junior
Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) poured in a game-high 23 points - his 17th 20-point effort of the season - while senior
Malik Sneed (Washington, D.C./Spingarn (Prince George's CC)) was perfect shooting the ball on the day (5-of-5 from the field, 6-of-6 from the line) en route to a career-high 16 points. Senior
Yahmir Greenlee (Philadelphia, Pa./Boys Latin) was also in double figures for the tenth consecutive game as he chipped in 14 points, including 9-of-9 from the free-throw line.
The Huskies shot 50% from the field in the first half (16-of-32) as they built up a 41-31 advantage at intermission. Mortellite had a dozen points in the opening half while Sneed chipped in with 10.
Cheyney led for most of the opening seven minutes of the game, building up as much as a four-point lead, 12-8, with 14:32 left in the opening half. The Huskies, however, caught fire and got a pair of clutch three-pointers from redshirt freshman
Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York (Le Moyne)) and freshman
Jordan Melochick (Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville) to take a 16-13 lead with 11:57 left in the opening twenty minutes. Melochick's triple gave Bloomsburg the lead for good.
Bloomsburg continued to shoot well and extended the lead to as many as 12 points late in the first half before settling for its 10-point advantage at the break.
The Huskies carried that momentum into the start of the second half as they went on a 13-2 run in the opening four minutes of the half to balloon the lead to 54-33 with 16:00 left in regulation. The teams exchanged points over the next two minutes and, after Greenlee hit a pair of foul shots, the Huskies still led by 21, 58-37, with 13:53 left.
But, Bloomsburg went ice cold and Cheyney began to chip away at the lead and put things in serious jeopardy for the Huskies. Bloomsburg went scoreless for 7:20 and, during that time, the Wolves scored 17 unanswered points to cut the Huskies' advantage to 58-54 with 6:33 left in regulation.
Sneed, who entered the game as a 60% foul shooter (33-of-55), hit a pair of free throws to finally get the Huskies back on the scoreboard. Greenlee followed with two foul shots and Sneed hit two more and, all of a sudden, the Huskies were back in front by ten, 64-54, with 5:10 left.
The Wolves cut the lead back to seven, 66-59, with 2:07 left before Mortellite came up with the dagger - his fifth three-pointer of the game - with 1:58 left to put the Huskies back in front by ten. Saxton then went a perfect 4-of-4 at the foul line over the last two minutes to end any thoughts of a Cheyney comeback.
The Huskies attempted only 18 shots from the field in the second half and made only six (33.3%). But, their 17-of-17 performance at the foul line made up for the struggles from the floor. Bloomsburg shot 44.0% for the game (22-of-50) and 8-of-15 from long range (53.3%). Mortellite was 5-of-8 from downtown.
Bloomsburg, however, struggled on the glass. The Huskies had just three offensive rebounds and were outrebounded for the game, 38-26.
Cheyney made the same number of shots from the field (22) as Bloomsburg but was minus-six (2-of-7) from long range and was minus-four (17-of-21) from the free-throw line.
Amir Boney led the Wolves with 16 points and nine rebounds.
Bloomsburg will return home to host West Chester University at the Nelson Field House on Wednesday, February 1. Start time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
