CHEYNEY, Pa. - Sophomore
Marissa Molnar (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored a career-high 14 points off the bench to help lift the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team to its fifth win in the last six games, 62-48, at Cheyney University on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies improved to 6-13 overall and 5-10 in the Pennyslvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. The Lady Wolves dropped to 3-12 overall and 3-12 in league play.
Molnar scored nine of her career-high 14 points in the second half as the Huskies outscored the Lady Wolves in the final twenty minutes, 37-16, to erase a seven-point halftime deficit. Senior
Morgan Klunk (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) also scored all nine of her points in the second half.
Senior
Alex Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) hit double figures for the fourth consecutive game as she chipped in 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore
Taylor Sneidman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) added ten points in the victory.
It was an up-and-down game for the Huskies, who did not score until freshman
Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) knocked down a pair of free throws with 5:58 left in the first quarter. Those foul shots, however, started a 13-2 run for Bloomsburg which turned a 4-0 deficit into a 13-6 lead with 2:21 left in the opening quarter. The Huskies spread the wealth during the spurt, getting four points from Montana, three from sophomore
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic), and two each from Ross, Molnar, and sophomore
Allie Barber (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) who made her first collegiate start on Saturday. A triple from Sneidman ended the quarter with the Huskies leading, 16-8.
But, disaster struck in the second quarter. Molnar gave the Huskies a 19-10 advantage on a three-pointer with 9:34 left in the first half. Then, the Lady Wolves, led by Briana Hedgepeth, went on an 11-2 run to tie the game at 21-21 with 6:08 left. Hedgepeth scored six of Cheyney's 11 points during the run.
Cheyney continued to stay hot as it outscored Bloomsburg, 11-4, over the final 6:08, to take a 32-25 lead to the locker room at intermission. All told, the Lady Wolves scored 24 of the game's 33 points in the second quarter.
The roller coaster ride for the Huskies continued at the outset of the third quarter. As poorly as the second quarter went, Bloomsburg quickly eliminated the seven-point deficit with the first seven points of the quarter to tie the game at 32-32 with 7:51 left in the third. Klunk had five of the seven points.
Back, however, came the Lady Wolves. Cheyney outscored Bloomsburg, 7-4, over the next 4:48 to take a three-point lead, 39-36, with 3:03 left in the third quarter. But, the Huskies scored nine of the game's final eleven points of the quarter to take a 45-41 lead after three. Molnar scored seven points in the final 3:03 of the quarter to lead the Huskies.
Bloomsburg carried that momentum into the fourth quarter and never looked back as freshman
Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) scored the first four points of the quarter to build an eight-point lead, 49-41, with 8:16 remaining. The Huskies continued expanding the lead and, after Ross nailed a three-pointer with 3:38 left, they had their biggest lead of the game, 56-44. Cheyney cut the lead to eight with 2:36 left but the Huskies scored the final six points of the game - all on free throws - to hold on for the win.
The Huskies shot only 35.7% from the field (20-of-56) but made 12 of their 26 attempts in the second half (46.2%). The Huskies also shot a season-best 53.8% (7-of-13) from three-point range. Molnar and Sneidman each went 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
Cheyney, meanwhile, made only 5-of-29 (17.2%) from the field in the second half as the Huskies' defense clamped down and allowed only 16 second-half points. Cheyney held a 42-34 rebounding edge over Bloomsburg but turned the ball over 27 times.
Hedgepeth led the Lady Wolves with 17 points in the loss.
Bloomsburg will return home on Wednesday, February 1, to host West Chester University at the Nelson Field House. Start time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
