BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team came out firing on all cylinders on Tuesday night and never cooled off as the Huskies posted a 104-63 victory over visiting Cheyney University at the Nelson Field House. It marked the third straight victory for the Huskies who improved to 6-5 overall and 2-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. The Wolves, meanwhile, fell to 1-10 overall and 1-6 in league play.
The Huskies had five players finish in double figures led, once again, by redshirt junior
Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) who finished with 22 points. It was the tenth time in eleven games this season that Mortellite has hit 20 points in a game and he moved into 20th place on the school's all-time list with 1,118 career points after surpassing Matt Jefferson, who scored 1,114 from 2002-07.
Junior
Alex Prislupsky (Olyphant, Pa./Mid-Valley) was sensational shooting the ball as he finished with a career-high-tying 19 points which included a career-best six three-pointers on seven attempts. His previous high was triples on three separate occasions, most recently against Pitt-Johnstown earlier this season. He also blocked a career-high four shots in the victory.
Redshirt junior
Kyle-Michael Rose (Middletown, Del./Sanford School (Highland CC)) (16), junior
Carnell McGirt (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic (Valley Forge Military Academy)) (14), and senior
Yahmir Greenlee (Philadelphia, Pa./Boys Latin) (12) also hit double digits for the Huskies, who reached 100 points in a game for the first time since a 100-84 victory over Penn State Lehigh Valley on December 1, 2014. McGirt added 11 rebounds for his team-leading third double-double of the season.
Prislupsky started the night hitting back-to-back three-pointers on the Huskies' first two possessions - a sign of things to come - as the Huskies raced out to an 8-0 lead before the Wolves could get on the board. Bloomsburg continued to pour it on, building up as much as a 23-point lead, before settling for a 50-30 lead as the teams headed to their respective locker rooms at halftime.
Cheyney came out with some pressure at the outset of the second half as it got the Huskies' lead down to as few as 14 points with 18:13 left in regulation. But, Bloomsburg scored 51 points over the final 17:31 to pull away for the 41-point victory. Redshirt freshman
Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York (Le Moyne)), who just missed giving the Huskies six players in double figures, gave Bloomsburg the century mark when he hit a pair of foul shots with 1:23 left. Freshman
Jordan Melochick (Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville) finished off the scoring with his first collegiate basket.
Bloomsburg finished the contest shooting 33-of-58 (56.9%) from the field, which included a sizzling 17-of-23 (73.9%) in the second half. The Huskies also hit a season-high 13 three-pointers on 22 attempts (59.1%) and made 25-of-29 from the free throw line (86.2%). Bloomsburg also had season-highs in assists (25) and blocked shots (11) in the victory. Greenlee led the Huskies for the second straight game as he posted six helpers. Senior
Malik Sneed (Washington, D.C./Spingarn (Prince George's CC)) joined Prislupsky with four blocked shots.
Cheyney did, however, hold a 43-38 edge in rebounding as the Wolves pulled down 26 offensive rebounds. However, Cheyney turned those second chances into only 17 points.
The Wolves were held to 26.1% shooting on the night (18-of-69) as they made 15 fewer field goals than Bloomsburg despite attempting 11 more shots.
Zahir Stewart led Cheyney with 13 points while Khaalis Carter added 11 in the loss.
The Huskies will look to extend their winning streak to four straight when they head to Shippensburg on Friday, January 6. The Raiders, who ended Bloomsburg's season on a last-second buzzer-beater in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament a year ago, are off to an 11-0 start this season and are ranked 13th in the latest Division II Media Poll. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
