BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team struggled to generate offense on Tuesday night as it dropped a 59-48 decision to visiting Cheyney University at the Nelson Field House. The loss was the Huskies' seventh consecutive as they fell to 1-10 overall and 0-7 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. Cheyney, meanwhile, picked up its first win of the season as it improved to 1-6 overall and 1-6 in league play.
The Huskies were held to just 15 points in the first half and had only 27 points after three quarters before making things interesting in the fourth.
Trailing 39-27 after thirty minutes, Bloomsburg went on a 16-8 run at the outset of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 47-43, after sophomore
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic)'s fourth triple of the game, with 2:29 remaining in regulation. However, the Lady Wolves scored the next six points on back-to-back field goals from Marlon Herring and Qiuinniea Gross and a pair of free throws from Shania Stamper to extend the lead to 10 with 38 seconds left. Mack hit her fifth, and final, three-pointer four seconds later but Cheyney went 4-of-4 from the free throw line down the stretch to ice the contest.
Mack was the lone bright spot, in terms of scoring, for the Huskies as she finished with 17 points - 15 of which came on a career-high five three-pointers.
Bloomsburg trailed only 12-9 after the opening quarter despite making only 2-of-17 (11.8%) from the field in the opening ten minutes. Things did not get much better as the Huskies went 2-of-16 (12.5%) in the second quarter to finish the first half making only 4-of-33 shot attempts (12.1%). However, the Lady Wolves shot only 30.3% from the floor in the first half and only led the Huskies by eight, 23-15, at intermission.
In the third quarter, Cheyney pulled away. After freshman
Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) cut the lead to seven, 27-20, with 6:29 left in the period, the Lady Wolves scored the next nine points, and 12 of the next 15 points, to build up a pair of 16-point leads late in the frame. However, back-to-back buckets from sophomore
Taylor Sneidman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and freshman
Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) to close out the period, gave the Huskies some momentum entering the fourth quarter.
The Huskies finished the game shooting 25.4% from the field (17-of-67) while their woes at the free throw line continued as they went 9-of-16 (56.3%) from the charity stripe. Mack accounted for all five of Bloomsburg's three-pointers (5-of-11) - the rest of the team went 0-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Mack was the only player in double figures for Bloomsburg. Senior
Morgan Klunk (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) had eight points but missed her first ten attempts before going 4-of-4 in the fourth quarter. Montana and Corridoni each had six points in the loss with Corridoni adding a career-high 12 rebounds. The Huskies, in fact, outrebounded Cheyney, 46-44, with 24 of their rebounds coming on the offensive glass.
TaKayla Ellis led Cheyney with a game-high 19 points while Marlon Herring chipped in with seven points, eight rebounds, and three steals.
Bloomsburg will look to snap the losing skid when it travels to Shippensburg University on Friday, January 6. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
