BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team gave visiting Edinboro University at battle on Monday night but, in the end, the Huskies' upset bid fell shot as the Fighting Scots hung on for a 63-55 victory at the Nelson Field House. Bloomsburg suffered its ninth consecutive loss and dropped to 1-12 overall and 0-9 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. Edinboro improved to 13-2 overall and 9-0 in the PSAC Western Division.
Sophomore
Taylor Sneidman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) had the best game of her young collegiate career on Monday night as she led the Huskies with a career-high 14 points on 6-of-7 from the field and 2-of-2 from long range. She added three rebounds, three steals, and two assists in 38 minutes of action. Sneidman's previous high was seven points in the Huskies' loss to then-#2 California (PA) on December 18.
Senior
Alex Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and sophomore
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) joined Sneidman in double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Huskies only held the lead for 1:22 early in the game but was able to keep the Fighting Scots in their sights until the visitors built up a 13-point lead early in the fourth quarter.
Bloomsburg jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead in the opening minute on a three-pointer from Sneidman and a layup from Ross. The Fighting Scots went on a 5-0 run to take a 7-5 lead with 7:28 left in the first quarter - a lead they would never relinquish. Ross hit a jumper to tie the game at 7-7 before Edinboro, again, went on another 5-0 run to take a 12-7 lead with 5:02 left in the first quarter. The Fighting Scots would hang on to lead by one point, 17-16, after the opening ten minutes.
Sneidman hit her second three-pointer of the game - also a career-high - which knotted the game at 23-23 with 6:06 left in the second quarter. However, the Huskies couldn't get over the hump as Edinboro scored nine of the final twelve points of the half to take a 32-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Edinboro built the lead to as many as nine points, 41-32, with 5:55 left in the third quarter before the Huskies, again, attempted to make things interesting. Mack scored the next five points of the game - a layup and a three-pointer - to cut the Fighting Scots' lead to 41-37 with 4:45 left in the period. Similar to the end of the first half, Edinboro finished strong and scored eight of the final twelve points of the quarter to take a 49-41 lead after three.
Sneidman and Edinboro's Michaela Barnes exchanged baskets to start the fourth quarter before the Fighting Scots scored the next five points to extend their lead to 13 - 56-43 - with 8:05 remaining. Sneidman hit back-to-back baskets to get the lead back to single digits before back-to-back buckets from Edinboro's Ciara Rosten got the advantage back to 13 with 4:40 left in regulation. That lead proved to be too much for the Huskies to overcome.
Barnes led Edinboro with 15 points. Jontay Walton (13) and Rosten (10) also hit double figures. Edinboro's leading scorer, Katie Fischer, shot just 2-of-14 from the field and finished with nine points and eight assists while committing a game-high seven turnovers.
The Huskies shot 22-of-53 (41.5%) from the field - just under Edinboro's 21-of-50 (42.0%) effort. Edinboro also edged Bloomsburg, 34-32, in the rebounding department and made only one fewer miscue (21-20) than the Huskies. Edinboro came into the game second in the PSAC in turnover margin (+8.7).
Bloomsburg will return to action on Wednesday, January 11 when it hosts Mansfield University at the Nelson Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
