LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Redshirt junior linebacker
Nate Monroe (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) of the Bloomsburg University football team has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts during Saturday's 20-19 victory at West Chester University. It marks the first time in his collegiate career that he has been honored with a weekly accolade from the conference and he becomes the fourth different Huskies' player to earn a weekly honor this season, joining redshirt junior
Ryan Abbott (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School), senior
Eric Schwartz (York, Pa./Central York), and redshirt junior
Chris Gary (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood).
Monroe blocked an extra point attempt late in the second quarter which proved to be the difference as the Huskies earned a one-point victory on the road at West Chester to knock the Golden Rams from the ranks of the unbeaten in divisional play on Saturday. Monroe was also involved in a tackle of West Chester quarterback Paul Dooley short of the goal line on a two-point conversion midway through the fourth quarter. That play kept the Golden Rams' lead at five points and enabled the Huskies to pick up the go-ahead score with 1:39 left in regulation when redshirt senior quarterback
Chris Palubinsky (Ringtown, Pa./Shenandoah Valley) called his own number from a yard out.
The redshirt junior linebacker also led the Huskies with seven total tackles and had a half a tackle for a loss during Saturday's victory.
Monroe, is his first full season as a starter, currently leads Bloomsburg with a career-high 40 total tackles through seven games this season. He also currently leads the conference with three fumble recoveries and has 1.5 tackles for a loss, half a sack, and three pass breakups to his credit on the year. The blocked extra point on Saturday was the first blocked kick of his collegiate career.
With Saturday's victory, the Huskies are now part of a four-way tie for first place in the PSAC Eastern Division with three divisional games remaining in the regular season. Bloomsburg will be back on the road next Saturday, October 21, when it heads to East Stroudsburg University. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The Warriors lead the all-time series, 44-42-2, but the Huskies have won 16 of the last 20 meetings between the two schools including a 35-14 win at Redman Stadium last season.
