BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Junior
Brooke Zeiders (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) and senior
MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) scored five minutes apart early in the second half to erase a 1-0 deficit and to lift the tenth-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Saturday morning at Steph Pettit Stadium. With the win, the Huskies improved to 9-7 overall and 5-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings. For the moment, Bloomsburg moved into a tie for fourth in the league standings with Slippery Rock. The Crimson Hawks, meanwhile, dropped to 5-10 overall and 2-6 in league play.
Zeiders tied the contest at 1-1 just 3:42 into the second half when she buried a rebound past IUP goalkeeper, Alyssa Lerda, for her sixth goal of the season. Mahan, who was credited with the assist, took the initial shot that was stopped by Lerda but ended up on the stick of Zeiders who scored for the first time since notching a goal against Kutztown back on September 27.
Five minutes later, Mahan deposited a perfectly-centered pass from junior
Erica Krebs (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) into a wide-open net for her team-leading tenth goal of the season to give the Huskies their first lead of the contest at 2-1. With the goal, Mahan became the sixth player in the conference to reach double figures in goals and she moved into a tie for fourth-place in the league with 25 points. It also proved to be her third game-winning goal of the season to give her sole possession of the team lead in that category.
Freshman goalkeeper
Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) made the lead stand by stopping four IUP shots after the Huskies took the advantage. She made three successive stops on Matti Reightler with roughly 90 seconds left in regulation to keep the Crimson Hawks from tying the contest. Sheply finished with six saves on the day - five in the second half - to improve her record to 7-6 on the season.
Reightler scored IUP's lone goal of the contest with 6:38 left in the first half - her seventh goal of the season - when she poked home a rebound past Sheply. Kimberly Kelly had the assist on the marker.
Bloomsburg outshot IUP, 14-10, after holding a two-shot edge over the Crimson Hawks in each half. The Huskies also held an 8-5Â advantage in penalty corner opportunities. Lerda stopped two shots for the Crimson Hawks to fall to 5-9 on the season.
The Huskies recognized senior forwardÂ
MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area), senior midfielder
Geneka Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area), and senior defender
Sally DeLuca (West Pittston, Pa./Wyoming Area) prior to the contest and then honored them during a team party after the conclusion of the game.
Bloomsburg will return home on Wednesday, October 25, to host West Chester University in the final home regular season game of the season for the Huskies. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. from Steph Pettit Stadium. Bloomsburg will be looking to avenge a 5-1 loss against the Golden Rams in West Chester earlier this season.
