EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The ninth-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team took second-ranked East Stroudsburg University to the brink on Tuesday afternoon only to see Bailey Quinn score with 3:03 left in the first overtime period to lift the Warriors to a 3-2 victory over the Huskies at Whitenight Field. The loss dropped Bloomsburg to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings while East Stroudsburg improved to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in league play with the win.
Bloomsburg got off to a sluggish start as the Warriors raced out to a 2-0 lead at halftime. Emily Spangler put the hosts on the scoreboard with her third goal of the season ten minutes into the contest and then Melanie Shambaugh added her ninth tally of the season, off of a penalty corner, with just over a dozen minutes remaining in the opening half. Paige Harrold assisted on Spangler's marker while Spangler collected the assist on Shambaugh's goal.
East Stroudsburg outshot Bloomsburg, 8-5, in the opening half but three of the Huskies' shots came during the final four minutes.
Bloomsburg turned on the jets in the second half and quickly got on the scoreboard when junior
Erica Krebs (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia), after a scramble in front of the East Stroudsburg goal, registered her second tally of the season just 4:37 into the period. Junior
Abby Sauder (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) earned her second helper of the season on Krebs' seventh career goal. Then, just seven minutes later, senior
MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) tied the game at 2-2 with her team-leading seventh goal of the season which eventually forced the overtime session.
The Warriors mounted pressure towards the end of regulation as they had three penalty corner opportunities in a little over a three-minute stretch. Freshman
Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) collected three saves and got some help from senior
Sally DeLuca (West Pittston, Pa./Wyoming Area), who notched her PSAC-leading fifth defensive save of the season with just under five minutes remaining.
Bloomsburg was awarded a penalty corner nearly five minutes into the overtime period but was unable to convert and the Warriors mounted the attack from there. Back-to-back saves from Sheply kept the game tied at 2-2 momentarily before Quinn was able to bang home the game-winner - her sixth goal of the season - with just over three minutes remaining in the first overtime session.
East Stroudsburg finished with a 21-12 shot advantage, including a 4-0 edge in overtime. The Warriors also held a slight edge in penalty corners, 6-4.
Sheply finished the contest with seven saves to fall to 4-4 on the season. Halle Frisco improved to 10-2 overall with a six-save performance.
Bloomsburg has now played six games against teams ranked in the top ten this season - five of which were ranked in the top five at the time. Four of the five contests against top-five teams were decided by one goal and two were decided in overtime. The Huskies are 2-4 against ranked opponents this season.
The Huskies will take a break from their stretch of three straight top-five teams when they entertain Mercyhurst University on Saturday, October 7, during Homecoming Weekend at Steph Pettit Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Then, on Sunday, the Huskies will host Lindenwood University in a non-conference tilt beginning at 12:00 p.m.
