BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team showed its flair for the dramatic yet again on Wednesday (Oct. 4) using a late comeback effort to down visiting Shippensburg 4-3 at Steph Pettit Stadium.
The Raiders got on the board first in the eighth minute when Izzy Weigel got free in space from the top of the box and sniped the top left corner for her fourth of the season. The Raiders doubled their lead on the home team in the 23
rd minute when Kiersten Priest took a corner kick from the far flag. Priest bent it perfectly inside the far post and needed no help to notch her second of the season. The Raiders carried their 2-0 lead and the momentum to the break, despite the shots being even at four for both teams.
The Huskies began to show signs of life right away in the second half, and finally broke through in the 51
st minute. The Huskies gained a corner kick at the far flag, and the ball was sent in to
Jessica Supp (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge). Supp then fed
Mackenzie Gebhardt (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) who scored her fourth of the season to cut the deficit in half. The deficit was back to two in no time when a Bloomsburg infraction set up a free kick in the 55
th minute. Mariah Varner took the free kick and found Mallory Patterson, who headed it past Huskies keeper
Jenna Hawkins (Hamburg, Pa./Fleetwood) to make it 3-1 Raiders. Shortly after the third goal, Hawkins was lifted in favor of
Olivia Schantz (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland). The teams went scoreless until the 80
th minute, with the Huskies pushing the pace. Supp set up
Lauren Hoelke (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) in the box after a Huskies free kick, and Hoelke headed in her second of the year to make it a one-goal contest yet again.
The Huskies (7-2-2, 6-2-2 PSAC) momentum just built from that point, as three minutes later they were back in the offensive end. A ball was sent in to the box, and cleared by a Shippensburg defender. The clear attempt found the feet of
Holly Norbury (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional), who fired it through the crowd in the box. The shot torched the twine in the bottom left corner for Norbury's first career goal to tie the match at three with under eight minutes to play. The Huskies kept right on pushing, and found themselves in the offensive end again. A Shippensburg infraction set
Hannah Miller (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge) up with a free kick in good position. Miller played the ball down the wing to
Allie Barber (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area), who then sent the ball to the front of the net from the far edge. It was the freshman
Hailey Arpin (Odenton, Md./Arundel) netting her first career marker in the 86
th minute that would put the Huskies ahead for good. Three goals in 5:59 kept the Huskies undefeated on home turf and helped them pick up a key PSAC win.
In addition to the scoring,
Natalie Holmes (Laurel, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and
Megan Callan (Eldersburg, Md./Century) each contributed two shots in the contest, while
Erin Bielski (York, Pa./Century (Md.)) and Supp each registered one. As a team, the Huskies owned a 13-7 advantage in shots for the match, as well as a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks. Hawkins made one save in 57:18, while Schantz (1-0-0) collected her first collegiate win in 32:42 of relief.
The Huskies will travel west on Saturday (Oct. 4) to battle Slippery Rock in conference action. Kickoff for that match is slated for 4:00 p.m.
