Football Falls To Kutztown, 23-7, On Homecoming Saturday

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University football team recorded only seven first downs and amassed just 166 yards of total offense on Saturday afternoon as Kutztown University handed the Huskies a 23-7 loss to spoil Homecoming Weekend at a jam-packed Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Huskies as they dropped to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings. The Golden Bears improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in divisional action.

It marked the second straight loss to the Golden Bears in the all-time series and it snapped an 11-game winning streak against the Golden Bears at Redman Stadium.

The Huskies totaled only 62 rushing yards on 27 carries as redshirt sophomore Qmac Quiteh (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) led the ground game with 50 yards on 14 attempts. Redshirt sophomore Alex Gooden (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara), who rushed for a career-high 164 yards last Saturday at Millersville, was held to just 13 yards on nine carries against the Golden Bear defense. Through the air, redshirt senior Chris Palubinsky (Ringtown, Pa./Shenandoah Valley) completed just 10-of-25 passes for 104 yards and was picked off three times.

Despite the offensive woes for the Huskies, the defense kept the game close as the unit forced two Kutztown turnovers - one of which led to Palubinsky's one-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. The Golden Bears had only turned the ball over three times through the first five games of the season.

Bloomsburg totaled just 44 yards of offense in the opening half but the defense kept the game scoreless through the first thirty minutes of action. The Golden Bears missed a 33-yard field goal on their opening drive of the game and then had an opportunity to put points on the scoreboard on the final drive of the half before the Huskies' defense came up with a huge play to keep the game locked in a scoreless tie as the teams headed to the locker room.

The Golden Bears started the first half's final drive at their own 33-yard line with 1:09 remaining. On third-and-seven from the 36, the Huskies seemingly stopped the Golden Bears after redshirt junior Marquis Seamon (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) broke up a pass at midfield. However, a pass interference call kept the drive alive and, on the next play, Kutztown quarterback Collin DiGalbo hit Amadou Barry on a 48-yard completion to the Bloomsburg two-yard line. Redshirt sophomore Alex Annan (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) tackled Abdul-Hassan Neblett for no gain on the first-and-goal play to force Kutztown to take its final timeout of the half with 11 seconds left. On the next play, redshirt seniors Ezra Ranco (Trappe, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and Marquez Norford (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) combined to sack DiGalbo and the Golden Bears could not get another snap off.

Kutztown broke the scoreless tie on its opening drive of the third quarter. After the Huskies went three-and-out on the first possession of the half, the Golden Bears drove 36 yards on nine plays which culminated with a 31-yard field goal from Alec Rosenfeld with 9:48 left in the third.

Later in the quarter, Kutztown added to the lead when DiGalbo hit Josh Lee in the back corner of the endzone from 13 yards out and, after Rosenfeld booted the extra point, the Golden Bears led 10-0 with 1:41 left in the third quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Golden Bears worked an onside kick to perfection as they recovered at the Bloomsburg 47-yard line and were in business again. But, as the defense did much of the afternoon, they kept Kutztown off the scoreboard and gave the offense a chance. Kutztown went three-and-out on the possession - capped off by redshirt junior Jake Klinger (Berwick, Pa./Central Columbia)'s sack on third-and-ten - to force a Golden Bear punt.

But, the Bloomsburg offense couldn't take advantage of the momentum and were forced to punt on its first drive of the fourth quarter. But, on the third play of Kutztown's possession, redshirt senior Scott Beltz (Pen Argyl, Pa./Pen Argyl) forced, and recovered, a fumble at the Kutztown one-yard line to give the Huskies life. On the first play of the drive, Palubinsky plunged his way into the endzone for his sixth rushing touchdown of the season with 10:03 left in regulation. Redshirt junior Ryan Abbott (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James School) booted the extra point to cut the deficit to 10-7.

After a Kutztown drive stalled at midfield, the Huskies got the ball back with 6:23 left, trailing 10-7. Palubinsky got the Huskies to the Kutztown 23-yard line when he hit redshirt sophomore Michael Allen (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) for 49 yards on third-and-six. However, three plays later, Palubinsky was picked off at the Kutztown two-yard line by Shawn Turber-Ortiz who returned the interception 50 yards to the Bloomsburg 48. Two plays later, the Golden Bears were back in the endzone on an 11-yard touchdown run from DiGalbo and the comeback bid came to an end.

Evan Culver put the finishing touches on the score with a 21-yard touchdown run with 1:48 left.

Kutztown ran 77 plays - 25 more than Bloomsburg - and outgained the Huskies 442-166. Allen caught a game-high seven passes for 91 yards for the Huskies as he accounted for 91 of the team's 104 receiving yards on the afternoon.

DiGalbo completed 17-of-30 for 233 yards and one touchdown. Neblett was the team's leading ball carrier as he gained 67 yards on 12 carries. Kutztown rushed for 209 yards on the afternoon.

Defensively, Ranco and redshirt junior Nate Monroe (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) led the Huskies with a game-high nine tackles apiece. Klinger finished with seven tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss, and one sack.

The Huskies will be back in action next Saturday, October 14, when they head to West Chester University. Kickoff is slated for 12:30 p.m.
