Huskies Fall at No. 16/23 USciences Wednesday Night

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team dropped its non-conference contest at No. 16/23 University of the Sciences 69-44 on Wednesday (Nov. 15).

The Huskies trailed after the first quarter 9-8, highlighted by three-pointers from Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) and Marissa Molnar (Erie, Pa./McDowell). Saxton's three-pointer put Bloomsburg up 5-4 just before the halfway point, before Molnar's long ball put the Huskies up by a pair with 3:26 left in the quarter.

The Devils took control for most of the second quarter, ultimately outscoring Bloomsburg 25-15 and taking a 34-23 lead to the half. USciences went on an 11-2 run that spanned the course of the first four minutes of the frame. After a bucket from Leah Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) opened the quarter and gave the Huskies a 10-9 lead, Sarah Abbonizio started the run by knocking down a pair of free throws. The two teams went empty for two possessions before Alex Thomas hit a three-pointer to make it 14-10. The following possession after a Huskies foul sent her to the line, Lauren Trisch split a pair of free throws to make it a five-point game. On the next possession, it was Thomas again from long range that forced Bloomsburg to use a timeout with the deficit climbing to eight. Out of the timeout, Bloomsburg again came up empty and Thomas hit a jumper from inside the arc to stretch the Devils' lead to 10. Myers finally broke the run on the following trip down the floor to get the game within single digits. Abbonizio responded with another bucket to make the Devils lead double digits again, before Thomas knocked down yet another triple on the following possession. The Devils stretched their lead to as many as 17 in the frame, before back-to-back long balls from Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) and Saxton cut the deficit to 11 as the half ended.

The Huskies struggled to score the basketball in the third quarter, being out-scored 19-8. USciences stretched its lead between 13 and 22 points in the frame.

The Devils maintained a lead of at least 20 all throughout the fourth quarter, and even stretched their lead to as many as 32.

As a team, Bloomsburg shot 31.3 percent (15-48) from the floor, as well as 22.7 percent (5-22) from beyond the arc and a season-best 81.8 (9-11) from the free throw line. The Huskies hung around in the rebounding category, only falling short 30-28 including winning the offensive glass 7-3. Bloomsburg also got more production from their reserves, with the bench out-scoring their counterparts 27-23. Finally, BU out-worked USciences for second chance points 10-4. Individually, Saxton scored a team-high and career-high 12 points in the contest, shooting a perfect 2-2 from downtown as well as going 4-4 from the stripe. Myers and Lee each contributed six points, with Myers and Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) each pulling down a team-high five boards. Six other Huskies chipped in points in the loss.

The Huskies continue their road swing on Saturday (Nov. 18) when they open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at Pitt-Johnstown. Tip-off for that contest is set for 1:00 p.m.
