INDIANA, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team fell in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play for the second straight day, losing at No. 20 IUP 78-50 on Sunday (Nov. 19).
The Huskies started the game slow offensively, while the Crimson Hawks went on an 8-0 run over the first three minutes to force an early timeout from BU. Carolyn Appleby opened the scoring with a jumper, three consecutive layups from Brittany Robinson capped off the run.
Taylor Sneidman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) broke up the run with a layup to get BU, on the board, before Megan Smith hit a pair of free throws to re-gain the eight-point lead. That developed into another 6-0 run that left IUP up by 14. The Huskies responded with a jumper from
Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) and another layup from Sneidman.
Megan Brandt (Lebanon, Pa./Northern Lebanon) knocked down two free throws, only to be matched by a pair of free throws from Lauren Wolosik. Bloomsburg would out-score IUP 6-4 in the final few possessions of the quarter, but IUP led 22-14 after 10 minutes.
The Crimson Hawks started the second quarter hitting four consecutive three-pointers, with three coming from Wolosik and one from Smith. After the fourth, the Crimson Hawks led by 20.
Lauren Oeth (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) would split a pair of free throws on the following trip down the floor, before Halle Denman knocked down the fifth long ball of the quarter.
Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) knocked down a jumper with 5:20 left to cut the deficit to 20, but it was matched by a pair of free throws from Appleby. For the remainder of the quarter, IUP's smallest lead was 19. They doubled up Bloomsburg in scoring in the half, taking a 50-25 lead to the break.
The Crimson Hawks stretched their lead to as many as 32 in the third quarter, out-scoring Bloomsburg 18-15.
IUP went on to out-score the Huskies 10-8 in the fourth quarter.
Bloomsburg shot 36.0 percent from the field, just 8.3 percent from downtown and 81.3 from the free throw line. The Huskies and Crimson Hawks each pulled down 31 rebounds in the contest. Brandt was the lone Husky to score in double-figures, leading the team with 10 points. Brandt marked a new career-high in the scoring column, as well as notching career-highs in minutes (23), free throws (4) and assists (3). Her three total field goals also matched a career-high. Sneidman, Corridoni,
Payton Spadaccino (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock South) and Montana each finished with six points. Saxton and
Marianna Maldonado (Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) each chipped in four, while
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) and
Lauren Oeth (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) each added three.
Darcy Lee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) also got on the scoresheet with two points. Corridoni, Brandt and Spadaccino each pulled own a team-high four boards, while Brandt's three helpers also led the team.
The Huskies take the floor for the last time before the Thanksgiving holiday on Tuesday (Nov. 21) when they host Holy Family in non-conference action. Tip-off is slated for 5:00 p.m. at Bloomsburg's Nelson Field House.
