Women's Basketball Wins Second Straight, Downs Chestnut Hill on the Road Tuesday Night

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team earned a close road win Tuesday night (Nov. 28), knocking off Chestnut Hill 58-53.
Both teams started off the game very cold shooting, with the game only being 4-2 at the halfway point of the opening frame. After a layup from Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead, Vicky Tumazs split a pair of free throws to knot the game. The Griffins would go on an 11-2 run that spanned the remainder of the quarter, ending the frame with Chestnut Hill leading 11-4.

The Huskies used two big runs in the second quarter to ultimately take their second lead of the game to the half. The frame started with a three-pointer from Darcy Lee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle), before Jaeda Wildgoose scored three points the old-fashioned way to tie the game. The following trip down the floor it was Lauren Oeth (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) getting in on the scoring with a layup, which was countered by a bucket from Shannon Glenn. Oeth's hand stayed hot for the next two possessions, scoring a layup and knocking down a triple to get Bloomsburg within two possessions. About two minutes worth of empty possessions passed before Payton Spadaccino (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock South) added a bucket to get the Huskies Cailey Gibson calmed the run with a layup on the next possession for Chestnut Hill, before Cassie Sebold made a layup to get the Griffins up by three with under 40 seconds left. The clock ticked down to 28 seconds before Leah Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) scored a left-handed layup to get BU within one. After a missed Griffin shot with 11 seconds left, the Huskies secured the rebound and hustled down the floor, with Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) finding Lee open in the corner for her third long ball of the frame. The Huskies led 26-24 at the half after out-scoring Chestnut Hill 22-13 in the quarter.

The two teams played a tight, back and forth third quarter, that saw the Griffins re-gain their lead 45-41. Bloomsburg's biggest lead in the quarter was four, thanks to back-to-back layups from Megan Brandt (Lebanon, Pa./Northern Lebanon) and Taylor Sneidman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley). A pair of free throws from Tumazs and a layup from Wildgoose knotted the game back up at 30, before the teams traded points for a six-minute span. With 1:50 left in the quarter, Glenn knocked down a three-pointer to give the Griffins a two-point lead, before Wildgoose doubled it with a layup on the next possession. Mary Trossi would get a layup off a steal, before Lee scored a bucket to get the game back to four points. Sebold and Lee would trade long balls to end the quarter, with the Griffins leading by four.

Myers would start the fourth with another layup, before the teams would go cold shooting for about three minutes. At the six-minute mark, it would be Myers again with the left hand to tie the game at 45. On the next possession, it was another bucket from Lee giving the Huskies the two-point lead. Just after the halfway point, it was Glenn tying the game up yet again. The teams would proceed to trade buckets for the next few possessions, going into the final two minutes separated by just one good shot. Just before the two-minute mark, Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) scored a layup to put the Huskies up by three, but it was quickly erased by another bucket from Wildgoose. With the ball and the 54-53 lead inside the final minute, the Huskies main goal was to take care of the basketball. It wasn't until with just 18 seconds left on the clock that Sneidman was fouled and sent to the stripe. The junior knocked down a clutch pair of foul shots to extend her team's lead to three. On the ensuing trip down the floor, the Huskies came up with a key rebound after an errant Chestnut Hill three-point attempt, giving the ball to Sneidman yet again. She repeated her process at the line yet again, extending Bloomsburg's lead to five for good.

This was the second straight game that the Huskies had held their opponent to single-digit scoring in the fourth quarter. As a team, Bloomsburg shot 38.1 percent from the floor, 29.4 percent from downtown and just 35.7 percent from the charity stripe. The Huskies out-rebounded the Griffins 49-40, including 18-14 on the offensive glass and 31-26 on the defensive end. Individually, the Huskies had two players score in double figures, including a career-high 16 points from Lee and 12 from Myers. Myers finished the night one rebound shy of a double-double with a career-high nine on the night. Lauren Oeth (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) chipped in nine points on the night, falling one point shy of a double-double, as she also pulled down a new career-high 10 boards. Six other Huskies found the scoring column in the win, while Myers and Sneidman each dished out a team-high four assists, marking another career-high for Myers.

The win moves the Huskies to 3-4 (0-2 PSAC) on the year. The team hits the hardwood again on Saturday (Dec. 2) when they welcome the No. 4 California (Pa.) Vulcans to Nelson Field House for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff.
