RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Redshirt senior
Christian Mortellite (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) poured in a season-high 31 points - the sixth 30-point game of his collegiate career - as the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team held off Felician University, 87-80, at the Job Gymnasium on Wednesday night. The Huskies improved to 4-2 overall and 4-0 against non-conference opponents this season while the Golden Falcons dropped to 3-4 on the year.
Bloomsburg has now gone undefeated (8-0) against non-league opponents in each of the last two seasons. The Huskies have not lost a non-conference game since dropping an 81-78 decision against Wilmington on November 24, 2015.
Mortellite scored 22 of his 31 points in the second half to help the Huskies thwart a frenetic Felician comeback bid. The sharpshooter finished 9-of-16 from the field, 3-of-5 from three-point range, and 10-of-11 from the free throw line en route to his first 30-point game of the season. He also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and added three assists and three steals.
Senior
Kyle-Michael Rose (Middletown, Del./Sanford School) tied a season-high with 16 points while graduate student
Hashim Moore (Sunrise, Fla./Hun School) and sophomore
Khary Mauras (Reading, Pa./Reading) also finished in double figures with 11 points apiece.
The teams exchanged buckets early before the Huskies went on a 10-0 run to take a 14-4 lead with 15:51 left in the opening half. Mortellite scored the first five points of the spurt to spark the Bloomsburg offense. Later in the half, the Huskies tacked on a 15-2 run to turn a seven-point lead into a 20-point advantage, 34-14, with 5:52 left in the opening stanza.
However, the pesky Golden Falcons would not go away as they responded by scoring 19 of the game's next 26 points to cut the Bloomsburg lead to 41-33 with 1:33 left. But, freshman
Myles Bunyon (Collegeville, Pa./Valley Forge Military Academy), who was pressed into services due to some first-half foul trouble to both Mauras and freshman
Matthew Kachelries (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus), nailed his second three-pointer of the half to give the Huskies a 44-33 lead at the break.
Bunyon, appearing in only his third game of the season, scored six points in four minutes late in the first half - the first points of his collegiate career.
Felician cut the lead back down to seven, 46-39, after Gjaimeir Stanford drilled a three-pointer with 17:59 left in regulation. But, the Huskies got a layup from Rose and a triple from Mortellite to extend the lead to 51-39 with 16:44 remaining. Bloomsburg continued to pour it on and ballooned the advantage to as many as 21 points, 74-53, with 7:02 left in regulation after a Rose layup.
But, Felician rallied again as it went on a 15-1 run over the next three minutes to cut the Bloomsburg lead to 75-68 with 4:09 left. Mortellite, who missed his first foul shot of the season on an earlier possession, knocked down two free throws with 3:41 left to, momentarily, stop the bleeding. The hosts, however, continued to make things interesting and cut the lead to as few as four points, 79-75, with 1:34 left after Stanford knocked down a jumper.
Rose answered with a layup on the ensuing possession to extend the lead to six with just over a minute remaining. Stanford countered with a layup to get the Huskies' lead back down to four with 37 seconds left but that would be as close as Felician would get as the Huskies went a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe in the closing seconds - four from Mortellite - to seal the win.
Rose shot 8-of-15 from the field en route to a season-high tying 16 points. Moore's 11 points was his third straight game in double figures while Mauras posted 11 points and a team-high six assists before fouling out. Redshirt sophomore
Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) contributed seven points, five rebounds, and three assists in the win.
The Huskies shot a season-high 50.8% from the field (31-of-61) and knocked down 7-of-14 (50.0%) from beyond the arc. Felician, meanwhile, connected on only 37.0% of its shots (27-of-73), including 11-of-34 (32.4%) from long distance. The Golden Falcons did out-rebound the Huskies, 44-38.
Stanford and Terrell Spaulding led Felician with 21 points apiece. Spaulding added a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Huskies will return to action on Saturday, December 2, when they host California University of Pennsylvania in a conference crossover matchup at the Nelson Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
