CLARION, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University wrestling team finished 12th in the Clarion Open on Sunday (Nov. 5), highlighted by
Andy Schutz (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area)'s fourth-place finish at 133 pounds. The Huskies finished with 34 team points.
Willy Girard (Williamstown, Pa/Williams Valley) dropped his opening bout at 125, before rebounding for a win by fall (1:37) over Penn State Behrend's Jake Frankhouseer in his first consolation match. Girard finished the day with one win.
Schutz advanced to the semifinals of the 133-pound weight class, starting with a win by fall (2:48) over Clarion's Rodney Driscoll. He earned another win by fall (1:51) over Buffalo's Derek Spann. Schutz advanced to the semifinals with an 11-7 win by decision over Lock Haven's David Fehlman. He fell to Pittsburgh's Micky Phillippi by way of an 8-7 decision to finish fourth.
At 149 pounds,
Evan Campbell (Berwick, Pa./Central Columbia) earned one win on the day, defeating Pitt-Johnstown's Josiah McClarren by decision 8-7 in his first consolation match.
Nate Newberry (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) fought his way through the consolation bracket at 165 pounds, defeating teammate
Anthony Vetrano (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) by decision (9-2) and Kent State's Kade Byland by decision (5-4). Newberry advanced to the round of four in the consolation bracket after advancing via default against Buffalo's Noah Grover. Newberry lost by fall (2:55) to Nick Kiussis of West Virginia.
At 174,
Kyle Murphy (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) dropped his opening match, before picking up two wins in the consolation round. Murphy defeated Cleveland State's Colton Carroll by decision 8-2 and advanced by way of medical forfeit over Ohio Valley's Dalton George. He dropped his match to Jacob Oliver of Edinboro by decision 3-2 in the first round of eight in the consolation bracket.
Trevor Allard (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) opened his slate at 184 pounds with a win by fall (0:58) over Clarion's Cochise Wanzer. Allard then picked up a 4-2 decision over Lock Haven's Gavin Caprio, before dropping to the consolation bracket with a loss. He advanced to the round of four of the consolation bracket with a 5-2 decision over Kent State's Colin McCracken, before gutting out a 7-6 win by decision over Utah Valley's Gary Jantzer. Allard fell by decision 8-1 to Cleveland State's Nick Corba.
In the 197-pound bracket,
Logan Womelsdorf (Benton, Pa./Northwest Area) started off his day with a 7-5 win by decision over Cleveland State's John Kelbly, before dropping to the consolation bracket with a loss. In the consolation bracket, he earned a win by fall (2:50) over Buffalo's Joe Ariola. He fell in the second round of eight.
After falling to the consolation bracket at 285 pounds,
Bruce Graeber (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) rebounded with a 10-8 decision over Clarion's Toby Cahill. He followed up the win with a 3-2 decision over Kent State's Billy Biola. Graeber advanced to the round of eight in the consolation bracket with a 6-2 decision win over Penn State's Bryce Hanley. He continued his streak with a 6-4 win by decision over Utah Valley's Ben Andrew Orem. He then dropped his consolation round of four match to Buffalo's Ian James by decision 4-2.
The Huskies begin dual match competition this coming Saturday (Nov. 11) when they head to Boone, N.C. for the Mountaineer Duals. The Huskies will wrestle host Appalachian State at 10:00 a.m. and Davidson at 12:00 p.m.
