Bloomsburg, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team used a strong third quarter to earn a win on senior day, 61-50, versus Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon. Bloomsburg finishes the 2016-17 regular season woth a record 10-16, and 9-13 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
With the victory, the Huskies clinched the fifth seed for the PSAC tournament. Bloomsburg will travel to play West Chester on Monday, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Before the game, the team honored its two seniors,
Morgan Klunk (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) and
Alex Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), with an on-court ceremony for their hard work and dedication over the past four years.
Klunk led the way with a team-high 14 points, and added four assists and two rebounds.
Taylor Sneidman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) added 13 points and three rebounds, while
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) had 11 points (8-8 FT) and five rebounds in the win.
The Huskies started off slow in the opening quarter, as Lock Haven jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first seven minutes of the game.
Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) and
Alex Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) got Bloomsburg back into it with consecutive jumpers, but the Bald Eagles would go on a 7-2 run and close out the first quarter leading, 16-9.
The Huskies' defense began to show in the second quarter, as it held Lock Haven to just eight points and forced multiple turnovers. Bloomsburg earned several trips to the foul line in the latter half of the quarter, and cut the deficit to 24-21, heading into halftime.
The Huskies shined in the third quarter, outscoring Lock Haven, 23-10, to take a 44-34 lead in to the final period. Bloomsburg bullied the Bald Eagles in the third quarter, and earned 12 free throws as a team in that 10-minute span.
Taylor Sneidman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) nailed a three-pointer to give the Huskies their first lead of the game, 30-29, with 6:37 to play in the third period. Bloomsburg would not trail for the rest of the game.
In the final frame, Sniedman poured-in five quick points to push the Huskies' lead to 49-39 with 8:15 to play. Neither team would score for the next three minutes, until a free throw by Lysa Mealin (23 pts, 12 reb.), made it a 49-40 contest with 5:15 to play.
The Bald Eagles would get as close as eight points late in the quarter, but Bloomsburg iced the game with free throws from Klunk and Mack.
Bloomsburg held lock Haven to just 35.4% shooting from the field, and outscored the Bald Eagles from the bench, 12-4. The Huskies committed just 12 turnovers and tallied 10 steals in the win.
