BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - After winning three straight for the second time this season, the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team saw its winning streak come to an end at the hands of the Shippensburg Raiders, who defeated the Huskies 82-56 on Saturday afternoon at the Nelson Field House. The loss dropped Bloomsburg's record to 7-14 overall with a 6-11 record against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opposition. Shippensburg, meanwhile, advanced to 18-5 with a 13-4 record in conference play.
Despite the loss, history was made in the game as senior
Morgan Klunk (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) became the 21st player in program history to score 1,000 points in her collegiate career. With 3:09 to go in the game, Klunk took a defensive rebound all the way down the floor and drilled a three-pointer that put her exactly at the 1,000-point mark. She also finished the game as Bloomsburg's top scorer, collecting 17 points. Her line also included four assists, three rebounds, and a steal.
Along with Klunk, two other Huskies finished with point totals in double digits. Sophomore
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic), who scored 20 points on Wednesday night against West Chester, contributed 11 points. Klunk's fellow senior
Alex Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) pitched in 10 points, marking her sixth game in a row scoring double digits.
The first quarter started off decently for the Huskies, as Mack was able to score two three-pointers in the first four minutes. Both Mack and Klunk finished the first quarter with six points apiece, as Klunk recorded two jumpers and a layup. After the first 10 minutes of the game, the first place Raiders led by just five, 21-16.
Unfortunately, disaster struck in the second quarter as the Raiders outscored the Huskies, 25-9. Within the first 2:40 of the period, the Raiders struck with three separate three-pointers, two from junior Victoria Blackburn and the other by senior Morgan Griffith. Just over a minute later, Blackburn added two more on a jumper, and the Huskies trailed by 16. Things would continue to get worse as the quarter went on, as the Raiders would go on runs of five and nine. Mack would drill another three pointer as time in the first half expired, but going into halftime the Huskies found themselves in a 21-point deficit as Shippensburg led 46-25.
Bloomsburg's offense put up a fight in the third quarter, as they outscored Shippensburg 20-19. However, the Huskies never had a run of more than four points and the Raiders kept pace the entire time. Ross finished the quarter with six points for Bloomsburg, and sophomores
Marissa Molnar (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and
Taylor Sneidman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) each collected four points. Even though the Huskies outscored the Raiders in the period, they still went into the fourth quarter trailing by 20.
The margin only got bigger in the fourth quarter, as the game finished with a 26-point difference. The main highlight of the period was the stoppage of play to honor Klunk reaching 1,000 career points, as family and teammates got to share a moment with the senior from Felton, Pennsylvania. From there, the action in the final three minutes of the game was sparse, as redshirt freshman
Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) scored the last two points of the game off of two free throws.
The Huskies finished the game shooting 21-of-46 from the field (45.7%), 4-for-14 from long range (28.6%), and 10-for-11 on free throws (90.9%). The Raiders shot 28-of-49 from the field (57.1%), 12-for-19 from long distance (63.2%), and 14-for-21 in their free throw attempts (66.7%).
Five Raiders finished with lines that included double digit point totals. Senior Lauren Gold led the way with 17 points. Blackburn and senior Colleen Young each totaled 14 points, and seniors Stephanie Knauer and Logan Snyder each contributed 12.
The Huskies now face a three-game road stand with the first game taking place at Millersville University on Wednesday, February 8. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
