HARROGATE, Tenn. - Senior
Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) launched a go-ahead grand slam home run in the top of the seventh inning to lift the Bloomsburg University baseball team to an 8-6 win at Lincoln Memorial in the opener of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Railsplitters took game two by a 3-2 final to earn the split in the two-game series. Bloomsburg moved to 10-7 overall while Lincoln Memorial kept its record at .500 as it moved to 13-13 on the season.
The Huskies trailed the opener, 6-0, heading to the top of the sixth inning before scoring four runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to come-from-behind to stun the Railsplitters. Bloomsburg had just one hit - a leadoff single from sophomore
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) in the third - through the first five innings against Lincoln Memorial Derek Trainor-Fogleman as the Huskies fell behind by six.
But, in the top of the sixth, back-to-back walks to freshmen
Chad Cooperman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) and
Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) and an RBI single from redshirt junior
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) got Bloomsburg on the board and ended the afternoon for Trainor-Fogleman. Cody Hinson came on in relief for Lincoln Memorial and recorded the first out before giving up a run-scoring double to Muth as the Huskies cut the lead to 6-2. Redshirt senior
Ryuta Amaike (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) brought Bloomsburg a run closer with an RBI fielder's choice which was followed by back-to-back singles from freshman
Blake Gular (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) and Shiffer, the latter bringing home another run, which cut the lead to 6-4.
After a perfect inning on the mound from sophomore
Jeremy Zezza (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) in the bottom half, the Huskies went at it again in the top of the seventh against Lincoln Memorial closer, Chase Randolph. Cooperman led off the inning with a single and, after Swiger was caught looking for the first out of the inning, Edgette walked and junior
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) singled to load the bases. Muth sent an offering from Randolph over the left field fence for the go-ahead grand slam home run as Bloomsburg took its first lead of the game, 8-6.
Zezza remained in the ball game in the bottom half of the seventh and allowed only a two-out single before getting the last out of the game on a grounder to third as the Huskies completed the comeback.
The sophomore earned his first collegiate victory in relief of junior
Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) as he pitched three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. He allowed only one baserunner - the two-out single in the seventh - and struck out three. Warren, meanwhile, pitched the first four innings and was touched up for six runs on ten hits. He walked one and struck out two.
Muth was 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and five runs batted in. Shiffer also had two of Bloomsburg's eight hits in the victory.
Game two was a pitcher's duel between sophomore
Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) and a pair of Lincoln Memorial pitchers.
The Railsplitters struck first in the bottom of the third against Raines on a two-out RBI double from Mason Ewers.
In the top of the fifth, the Huskies rallied for a pair of runs against Lincoln Memorial starter, Matt Walczak. Gular led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a single by freshman
Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock). After Swiger flied out for the first out of the inning, Edgette was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Benson then extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a two-run double down the left field line to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead. The hit ended the afternoon for Walczak as Timmy Wages took over and ended the inning.
The Railsplitters regained the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the sixth as Muta Crusoe laced a double down the left field line against Raines that scored a pair of runs.
Bloomsburg was set up for another comeback in the top of the seventh as Cooperman led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second when Swiger sacrificed him ahead 90 feet. The Huskies, however, could not plate the tying run as both Edgette and Benson lined out sharply to left field to end the game.
Raines fell to 2-1 on the season as he allowed three runs on six hits in a complete-game effort. He walked one and struck out five. Walczak went the first 4.1 innings for Lincoln Memorial and allowed two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out one. Wages earned the win, and improved to 3-1, after pitching 2.2 hitless and scoreless innings of relief. He walked two and did not strike out a batter.
Bloomsburg had only three hits in the game - one each from Benson, Gular, and Krizan.
The Huskies will be off until Friday, March 24 when they open up conference action at Shippensburg University for a twinbill. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The teams will meet at Danny Litwhiler Field on Saturday, March 25, also for a doubleheader, in the Huskies' home opener. First pitch on Saturday is also scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
