THOMASVILLE, N.C. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team scored a 7-4 win versus St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday evening.
With the win, the Huskies move to 6-4 on the season, while the Spartans fall to 3-2.
Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock) added two hits and scored two runs for the Huskies, while
Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) went eight strong innings and tallied eight strikeouts to earn his first win of the season.
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) went 1-for-3 with a RBI and two walks.
Two the teams traded scoreless innings until the bottom of the fifth, when Krizan singled to right field and scored two batters later on a wild pitch by John Bednarek.
Bloomsburg held that 1-0 advantage until the top of the seventh inning, when Giovanni Dingcong slammed a three-run home run to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead. The Huskies would quickly respond in their next at-bat.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Joey Wrabel (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) reached on an error, and was followed by a Krizan single to right field, setting up first and second with just one out. The duo advanced up a base thanks to a wild pitch, and Wrabel then-scored on a sacrifice fly by
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East). Krizan would advance to third on the sacrifice hit. Benson stepped up to the plate next and lined a double down the right field, scoring Krizan and tying the game. 3-3.
Bloomsburg would have the bases loaded later in the inning, but a
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) strikeout would end the threat.
After Warren shut down the Spartans in the top of the eighth, the Huskies loaded up the bases and scored two quick runs on a walk, and a wild pitch to give them a 5-3.
Ryuta Amaike (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) singled to right field and drove in Edgette and Krizan, giving Bloomsburg some insurance runs and a 7-3 lead.
The Spartans would score once in the top of the ninth, but
Chad Cooperman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) was able to record three out to preserve the win.
The Huskies will battle Seton Hill (12:45 p.m.) and Le Moyne (4:00 p.m.) on Sunday.
