LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team split a doubleheader at Lock Haven University on Saturday afternoon, dropping the first game by a 10-6 final before rebounding in a big way with a 14-2 victory in the nightcap. The Huskies, who won one of the four games against the Bald Eagles this weekend, moved to 19-15-1 overall and 7-8-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. Lock Haven, meanwhile, moved to 23-9 overall and 11-5 in league play.
In the opener, Lock Haven jumped on sophomore starter
Trey Hinkle (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Bald Eagles had four hits and took advantage of a walk and a Huskies' error in the opening frame.
Bloomsburg tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the third against Bald Eagles' starter, Brett Morrison. Freshman
Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock) led off the inning with a single and then advanced to third when freshman
Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) doubled to left. Redshirt junior
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) plated Krizan with an RBI groundout to get the Huskies on the board. Junior
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) followed by reaching on an error which allowed Holmes to score for the second run of the inning. In the bottom half, however, Lock Haven scored three runs on four hits against Hinkle to take a 5-2 advantage. Evan McFarland, Sam Kysor, and Hunter Szaflarski drove home the runs for the Bald Eagles.
The Huskies pulled to within a run in the top of the fifth by plating a pair. Krizan led off with a walk and then advanced to second when Edgette drew a one-out free pass. After Benson grounded out to second to advance both runners, senior
Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) came through with a clutch two-out, two-run single to cut the Lock Haven lead to 5-4. The Bald Eagles got a run back in the home half of the inning against freshman reliever
Ed Herbener (Freeland, Pa./MMI Preparatory School). Stover drove home the run with a sacrifice fly that scored Kysor who reached on a one-out single.
In the top of the sixth, the Huskies finally drew even as two runs crossed the plate to tie the game at 6-6. Freshman
Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) was hit by a pitch with one out and then advanced to second on a single from freshman
Tyler Nowmos (Wrightstown, Pa./Council Rock North). Krizan singled to load the bases with one out which forced Lock Haven to go to its bullpen. The Huskies countered with a move of their own as redshirt junior
Cy Treaster (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) came on to pinch hit for Holmes. Treaster found a hole and singled to drive home both Swiger and Nowmos to knot the score at 6-6.
But, it all went for naught as the Bald Eagles scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10-6 advantage. Herbener started the inning and Lock Haven's Matt Lahn broke the tie with a leadoff home run to jump start the Bald Eagles, who went on to score three more runs in the frame.
The Huskies got two runners on base in the seventh on an error and a walk but could not score.
Herbener was saddled with the loss as he allowed five runs on four hits in two and one-third innings. He walked two and did not strike out a batter. Hinkle survived only three and one-third innings after allowing five runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out one. Freshman
JJ Spehrley (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) got the final out in the sixth but not before allowing a hit and two walks.
The Huskies managed only six hits in the opener - two from Krizan.
But, in game two, the Huskies took out their frustration on Lock Haven starter, Avery Eddy, who entered with a team-best 1.73 ERA in seven appearances (four starts). Bloomsburg scored seven times in the first inning and then three more in the second as Eddy lasted only one and one-third innings and was charged with nine runs allowed on nine hits.
In the top of the first, the rally started with one out when Benson singled up the middle. Muth followed with a single and then sophomore
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) drove home Benson with a single of his own to get the Huskies on the board. Two batters later, Swiger was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home the second run of the frame. Freshman
Blake Gular (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) followed with the big blow of the inning - a grand slam home run - to extend the lead to 6-0. It was Gular's first collegiate grand slam and his third home run of the season. But, Bloomsburg was not done. Nowmos and Krizan laced back-to-back singles to start another rally. Edgette grounded out to advance both runners and Benson singled through the right side of the infield to plate Nowmos for the seventh run of the inning. Lock Haven ended the inning, however, when Krizan was thrown out at the plate also trying to score on Benson's single.
Redshirt senior
Ryuta Amaike (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) was the beneficiary of the run support and he responded by pitching a perfect 1-2-3 bottom of the first to get the bats right back to work. And they did.
In the top of the second, Muth led off with a single and then advanced to second on a single by Shiffer. After Amaike grounded out to advance both runners, Swiger greeted Lock Haven reliever, Colin Eckman, with a two-run double to extend the lead to 9-0. Three batters later, Krizan hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Swiger for the third run of the inning, and tenth of the game.
Amaike set the Bald Eagles down in order again in the second and the Huskies added two more runs in the top of the third to take a 12-0 advantage. Muth led off with a walk and Shiffer connected for his fifth home run of the season to extend Bloomsburg's lead. The Huskies added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 14-0 lead. Benson drove home Edgette with an RBI single after Edgette reached on a one-out double. Then, in the fifth, Krizan doubled to bring home Gular who doubled with one out.
Lock Haven scored its two runs in the bottom of the fifth to break up Amaike's shutout bid.
Amaike improved to 4-1 on the season as he went the distance for his first complete game of the year. He allowed two runs on three hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out six.
The Huskies supported him with 18 hits in game two - three each from Benson and Shiffer and two apiece from Muth, Gular, and Krizan. Muth and Shiffer each scored three times while Gular led the way with four runs batted in after his first-inning grand slam.
Bloomsburg will step out of conference play on Tuesday, April 18, when it travels to Slippery Rock University for a twinbill beginning at 2:00 p.m.
