Mansfield, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University softball team split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader at Mansfield on Saturday afternoon. Bloomsburg lost game one, 5-3, but responded with a 2-0 victory in the second contest.
With the split, the Huskies now sit at 23-15 (13-3 PSAC), while the Mountaineers are 21-12 (9-7 PSAC) on the season.
GAME ONE RECAP
In the first game, Mansfield struck first, with three runs in the third inning off of
Taylor Parker (Dewart, Pa./Warrior Run). Taylor Chidester hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Alli McGovern. Melanie Taylor later doubled and drove in Rachael Sterner and Laura Lawson, giving the Mountaineers a 3-0 lead.
Mansfield would add a run in the fourth and sixth inning, taking a 5-0 advantage into the top of the seventh inning, where the Bloomsburg would attempt a comeback.
Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) launched a two-run home run to left field, scoring
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) and making it a 5-2 game. Later in the inning,
Anna McElroy (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) tallied a RBI groundout, driving in
Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) to cut the deficit to just two runs, but the Huskies would not be able to complete the comeback.
Parker went the distance in the circle and struck out two in the loss.
GAME TWO RECAP
Tomaschik took to the circle in the second game, and spoiled any chance of a senior day sweep for Mansfield as she gave up just six hits, zero runs and tallied seven strikeouts in the 2-0 win.
The senior also helped her cause at the plate with a RBI double to center field that plated Mayhew in the top of the first inning.
The two teams would trade zeros in the scorebook for the next six innings as Tomaschik and Mansfield starter Connor Decker shined in the circle.
The Huskies would finally add an insurance run in the top of the seventh when
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) singled to left field and dove in
Bridget Casey (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge).
Mansfield would load the bases up in its' last at-bat, but Tomaschik was able to escape the jam and earn the win.
