BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team scored ten runs in the fifth inning of game one and then got a walkoff two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh from freshman
Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) in game two as the Huskies posted a doubleheader sweep of Mansfield at a sun-drenched Danny Litwhiler Field on Sunday afternoon. Bloomsburg won game one, 15-3, and then took game two, 8-6, to improve to 15-11-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. The Mountaineers dropped to 15-15 overall and 4-6 in divisional play.
The Huskies' ten-run fifth inning in game one blew open what was a 5-3 lead. Bloomsburg sent 13 batters to the plate in the frame and had six hits, two walks, a hit batter, and an error to plate its ten runs. Meanwhile, Swiger connected on an 0-1 offering from Mansfield reliever Tyler Guidos in the bottom of the seventh of game two as the Huskies completed the sweep. Swiger took over the team lead in home runs this season with five.
The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game one as redshirt junior
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East), who was 6-for-8 in the two games, led off the inning with a double and then scored on a two-out single from sophomore
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South).
The score remained until Bloomsburg added three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-0 lead. Freshman
Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township), who had a career-high three hits in game one, led off the inning with a double off the right field fence. Edgette followed with a single back up the middle to drive home Holmes for a 2-0 advantage. Junior
Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) singled through the hole on the right side of the infield to put runners at first and third with nobody out. After Benson stole second, senior
Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) singled to drive home Edgette for a 3-0 advantage. Shiffer drove home the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Benson from third.
Bloomsburg extended the lead to 5-0 with another run in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman
Chad Cooperman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) doubled with one out and then scored on a run-scoring single from Edgette to give the Huskies a five-run lead.
Junior
Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) was the beneficiary of the offense as be pitched brilliantly through the first four innings. But, the righthander ran into trouble in the fifth as Mansfield scored three runs to cut into the Bloomsburg lead. Warren, who had allowed only two hits over the first four frames, gave up a leadoff double to Brady Mengel and then a two-run home run to Colby Schearer as the Mountaineers cut the lead to 5-2. Taylor Hillson then doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch with one out. Warren struck out Peter Pena for the second out of the inning but then walked Ryan Paige and gave up an RBI single to Tanner Klein as Mansfield cut the lead to 5-3.
Then, the Huskies sent 13 men to the plate and scored ten runs on six hits in the bottom half of the frame to blow the game open.
Cooperman brought home the first two runs of the inning with a two-run double down the left field line to extend the lead to 7-3. Freshman
Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock) followed with a two-run single as the lead ballooned to 9-3. Edgette extended the lead to 10-3 with a sacrifice fly to center field and Shiffer doubled to left center to drive home a pair of runs to push the advantage to 12-3. Redshirt senior
Ryuta Amaike (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) then put the exclamation point on the inning with a three-run home run over the scoreboard in left field for the final three runs of the inning.
It was Amaike's third home run of the season.
Sophomore
Jeremy Zezza (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) pitched around a leadoff error in a scoreless sixth inning and then freshman
Ed Herbener (Freeland, Pa./MMI Preparatory School) tossed a perfect seventh inning, with a pair of strikeouts, to end the contest.
Bloomsburg had 15 hits in the opener - three each from Edgette and Holmes and two apiece from Cooperman and Shiffer. Edgette scored twice and drove in a pair while Shiffer collected a team-high four runs batted in.
Warren improved to 3-2 on the season after allowing three runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out eight. Edwin Lopez was saddled with the loss for Mansfield as he allowed nine runs (eight earned) on eleven hits in four and one-third innings. He walked one and struck out one as he fell to 1-3 on the season.
Like game one, the Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game two. Benson and Muth drew back-to-back walks with one out and then Shiffer, again, came through with an RBI single to get the Huskies on the board.
In the top of the second, however, Paige led off the inning with a solo home run off sophomore starter
Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) to knot the game at 1-1. Bloomsburg got the run back in the bottom of the third as Edgette and Benson provided the offense. Edgette doubled with one out and then scored when Benson followed with a double of his own to give the Huskies a 2-1 advantage.
Bloomsburg added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-1 advantage. Swiger led off the inning with an infield single, stole second, and advanced to third on a double by Cooperman. Krizan plated the first run of the inning with an RBI single to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead. Two batters later, Edgette singled up the middle to score Cooperman for a 4-1 margin.
But, Raines ran into trouble in the fifth as Mansfield scored five runs on five hits to take a 6-4 lead. Hillson drove home the first run with an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-2. Dio Infante followed with a two-run double to tie the game at 4-4 and Paige belted his second home run of the game - a two-run shot to center - to give the Mountaineers their first lead of the afternoon.
The Huskies tied the game at 6-6 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Edgette, again, plated the first run when he doubled down the left field line to score Krizan, who led off the inning with a walk. Muth tied the game at 6-6 with a run scoring fielder's choice as he beat out a potential double-play grounder to keep the inning alive.
That set the stage for the seventh. Amaike led off the inning with a single and was run for by redshirt freshman
Aaron Ovelman (Millville, Pa./Millville). Swiger fouled off a bunt attempt on the first pitch but then the bunt sign was taken off and Swiger launched the game-winning home run over the left center field fence to send the Bloomsburg faithful home happy.
Raines improved to 3-2 on the season as he went the distance. The righthander allowed six runs on eight hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out eight. Evan McAndrew started for Mansfield and allowed four runs on six hits in three innings. He walked three and struck out three. Guidos dropped to 3-1 on the season as he was charged for three runs on six hits in three innings. He walked one and struck out five.
Edgette was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in to pace the offense. Benson, Amaike, and Swiger each had two hits in the game two victory.
The teams will conclude the four-game series in Mansfield on Monday afternoon for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Huskies will then return home on Tuesday afternoon to host Clarion at Danny Litwhiler Field. First pitch of the twinbill is slated for 1:00 p.m.
