Buckhannon, W. Va. - The Bloomsburg University softball team saw its' 2017 season come to an end on Friday with a 5-3 loss in an NCAA Atlantic Regional elimination game against Charleston.
With the defeat, the Huskies end their season at 31-20 (16-4 PSAC), while the Golden Eagles move to 36-20 (23-10 MEC) this year.
GAME RECAP
The first three innings were a pitchers' duel between Charleston's Jessie Rowe and Bloomsburg's Mallory Tomaschik (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia), as hits were few and far between.
The Huskies stuck first in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Holly Peacock (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) launched her second home run of the season over the left field fence, giving Bloomsburg a 1-0 lead.
The lead was short-lived, as the Golden Eagles took a 3-1 advantage in the top of the fifth thanks to a three-run home run by Monica Carter.
After an inning of scoreless action, the Huskies' bats came alive again in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a Taylor Parker (Dewart, Pa./Warrior Run) groundout, Peacock and Tomaschik stepped up and recorded back-to-back singles.
After a Julia Knight (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) walk, Abbey Remley (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) hit a deep sacrifice fly to center, scoring pinch-runner Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and cutting the deficit in half. Bridget Casey (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) came up next and hit a single past first base to send Tomaschik across the plate and tie the game at three.
In the top of the seventh, the Golden Eagles loaded up the bases with one out thanks to a throwing error, fielder's choice and hit-by-pitch. The next batter stepped up and hit a hard grounder right at Remley, who fired the ball to catcher Anna McElroy (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) at the plate to record the force out.
Charleston would get their two go-ahead runs with the next batter, as a throwing error kept kept the inning alive and allowed the runners to cross the plate.
The Huskies had two runners on in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to get them across the plate and tie the game.
