Baseball Splits Pair Of Low-Scoring Games At Kutztown Thursday

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team got a pair of strong pitching performances from sophomore Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) and freshman Chad Cooperman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) as the Huskies split a doubleheader at Kutztown University on Thursday afternoon. The Huskies took game one by a 3-1 final before dropping game two, 2-1, to move to 22-24-1 overall and 9-16-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. The Golden Bears moved to 16-31 overall and 5-21 in league play.

Raines was dealing in game one as he needed just 84 pitches for the complete-game victory. He allowed one run on five hits, walked one, and struck out six to even his record at 4-4 on the year.

All three of the Huskies' runs came in the top of the fifth inning as Bloomsburg took a 3-0 lead against Kutztown starter, Anthony Atticks. In the fifth, redshirt junior Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) led off with a single and then advanced to second on a passed ball. After junior Tyler Benson (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) walked, sophomore Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) reached on a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out. Senior Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) was plunked with a pitch - one of four hit batsmen by Atticks - to drive in the first run of the game. Two batters later, freshman Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) was hit by an Atticks offering to allow Benson to score for the second run of the inning. Shiffer would later score the third run of the inning when freshman Tyler Nowmos (Wrightstown, Pa./Council Rock North) reached on an error.

Kutztown ruined Raines' shutout bid in the bottom of the sixth. Bo Rottet led off the inning with a double and then scored on an RBI single from Nick Laffery for, what proved to be, the Golden Bears' only run of the game.

Atticks dropped to 1-3 on the season as he allowed three runs on four hits. He walked three, struck out four, and hit four batters.

Bloomsburg managed six hits in the opener - two each from Edgette and Shiffer. Rottet had three of Kutztown's five hits in the setback.

Cooperman, meanwhile, suffered the tough-luck loss in game two as the Golden Bears got a walkoff RBI double from Jeff Zebrowski with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. The freshman righthander allowed only two runs on six hits and struck out five while not issuing a walk. He dropped to 0-5 on the year.

Kutztown took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single from Lafferty. The Huskies tied the game in the top of the fifth inning against Kutztown starter, Ryan Clow. Nowmos was hit by a pitch with one out and then came all the way around to score from freshman Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock) doubled down the left field line to knot the game at 1-1.

But, in the bottom of the seventh, Kutztown's Joe Santospago doubled with one out and then scored when Zebrowski doubled to right field with two outs in the inning.

Anthony DeVito was credited with the victory in relief for Kutztown as he improved his record to 1-3. He allowed one hit in one and two-thirds scoreless innings.

The Huskies had five hits in the nightcap - two each from Shiffer and Krizan. Kutztown had six hits - two each from Santospago and Zebrowski.

The teams will conclude the four-game series, and the regular season, on Sunday afternoon, May 7, at Danny Litwhiler Field. It will be Senior Day for the Huskies as the team will honor three seniors - Cy Treaster (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County), Damin Muth (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland), and Ryuta Amaike (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall). First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
