WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The sixth-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team suffered its second consecutive loss on Tuesday afternoon with a 5-1 setback at fourth-ranked West Chester University. The Huskies fell to 3-2 overall while the Golden Rams improved to 3-0 on the young season.
After a scoreless 25 minutes at the outset of the contest, the Golden Rams scored a pair of goals in just over four minutes to take a 2-0 lead at halftime. Kaitlin Hatch got the hosts on the board with her fourth goal of the season at 25:16 and Caitlin Kelly followed with her third goal of the year at 29:29.
Rachal Toppi gave West Chester a 3-0 lead just five minutes into the second half and then Hatch scored her second goal of the game midway through the half to extend the Golden Rams' advantage to 4-0. Junior
Abby Sauder (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) got the Huskies on the board with her fifth goal of the year with 9:04 left in regulation to cut the deficit to 4-1. Senior
Geneka Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) picked up the assist as she fed a pass in front that Sauder was able to tip-in past West Chester goalkeeper, Marissa Elizardo.
Sauder's goal put her all alone for the team lead in goals with five. Senior
MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) and junior
Brooke Zeiders (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) have four goals apiece.
Caitie McNamara completed the scoring for West Chester with her first goal of the season less than three minutes later.
Freshman goalkeeper
Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) suffered the loss to fall to 3-2 on the season. She was credited with six saves on the afternoon. Elizardo improved to 3-0 on the year as she stopped three shots in the victory. West Chester outshot Bloomsburg by a 20-7 margin.
The Huskies will look to get back on track when they head back on the road on Saturday, September 16, to square off against the Lakers of Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania. Start time from Tullio Field is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
