BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The seventh-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team could not solve Mansfield University sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Ryan on Wednesday afternoon as the Huskies fell to the visiting Mountaineers, 1-0 in overtime, at Steph Pettit Stadium. The loss dropped the Huskies to 4-3 overall as Bloomsburg has now lost three of its last four contests. Mansfield, meanwhile, improved to 4-3 on the season with the victory.
Mansfield's Katie Jamison provided the only offense on a penalty corner when she tipped a centering pass from Mikalia Chakon past freshman goalkeeper
Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) with 4:42 remaining in the first overtime period. It was Jamison's second goal of the season. Three minutes earlier in the extra session, junior
Erica Krebs (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) nearly sent the Huskies' crowd home happy as she had a breakaway opportunity. However, Ryan came out of the crease to challenge the shot and was able to stack the pads and stuff Krebs before the junior was able to get a great shot off. It was one of a dozen saves made by the Mansfield goalkeeper on the afternoon.
The Huskies held a 19-8 advantage in shots and also had a slight edge in penalty corners, 11-7, for the contest. Seniors
MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) and
Geneka Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) led the Huskies with three shots apiece.
Sheply dropped to 4-3 on the season with the setback. She was credited with four saves on the afternoon.
It was only the third loss to the Mountaineers in 51 career meetings between the two schools and it snapped a six-game winning streak by the Huskies dating back to Mansfield's 4-2 victory over Bloomsburg on September 29, 2012.
Bloomsburg will have a week off to regroup as the Huskies will not return to action until Wednesday, September 27, when they host Kutztown University in the conference opener. Start time from Steph Pettit Stadium is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
