Offense Continues To Roll As Field Hockey Blanks Newberry Sunday

HTML BOX SCORE

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - For the second consecutive day, the eighth-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team scored seven goals as the Huskies blanked Newberry College, 7-0, at Queens University of Charlotte on Sunday. Bloomsburg improved to 2-0 on the young season while the Wolves fell to 1-1 overall.

Sophomore Ali McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech) had a goal and two assists while junior Brooke Zeiders (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) scored a pair of goals to pace the offense.

The 14 goals in back-to-back victories over the weekend marked the highest offensive output by a Huskies team in consecutive wins since scoring 21 goals in victories over Kutztown and Mansfield on November 3 and November 6, 2010.

Bloomsburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead at halftime and then added four goals in the second half to complete the shutout. Freshmen Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) and Hannah Barnard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) combined for the shutout victory with Sheply picking up her second win of the season. Bloomsburg also shutout the Wolves in shots as the Huskies outshot Newberry, 26-0, over the entire contest.

McKay jumpstarted the offense with her first goal of the season just over five minutes into the contest to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Senior Geneka Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) notched her first goal of the season on a rebound five minutes later to extend the lead to 2-0. Senior Sally DeLuca (West Pittston, Pa./Wyoming Area) was credited with the assist after taking the initial shot.

Just over two minutes later, freshman Emily Alker (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) buried her first collegiate goal on a breakaway to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead at 12:20. McKay added the assist.

The Huskies outshot Newberry, 16-0, in the first half and held a 5-0 advantage in penalty corners.

Junior Abby Sauder (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) knocked home a rebound off of a penalty corner just over 11 minutes into the second half to extend the Huskies' lead to 4-0. Sauder's third goal of the young season was assisted by senior MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area).

Less than two minutes later, MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) scored an unassisted breakaway goal - her second goal of the year - as the lead ballooned to 5-0. Zeiders finished off the scoring with a pair of goals at 61:32 and 65:51 - her second and third tallies of the year. McKay added her second assist of the game on Zeiders' second goal of the contest.

Dakota Elzy had nine saves for the Wolves.

The Huskies will entertain Adelphi University on Tuesday, September 5 at Steph Pettit Stadium in the team's home opener. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
