WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team fell in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at West Chester 78-60 on Saturday (Jan. 27). The loss extends BU's losing streak to seven games.
West Chester led 23-14 at the end of the first quarter, while making five three-pointers in the frame. Camden Boehner opened the scoring with a layup, before Mia Hopkins got West Chester up by four with a jumper.
Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) got the Huskies on the board with a jumper just over two minutes into the quarter, before another bucket from Hopkins got the Golden Rams up 6-2. Just over four minutes into the game, BU would get within four on a layup from
Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) to make it 6-4. Katherine Fisher and Montana would trade layups leading up to the halfway point of the frame, before Boehner knocked down a triple to get West Chester up by five with 4:45 to play in the opening quarter. With four and a half minutes to play, the Huskies got within three with two good free throws from
Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) before a series of empty possessions for both teams took the quarter into its final four minutes. A jumper from Montana got BU back within one (10-11) before a layup from Saxton gave the Huskies a brief 12-11 lead with 2:55 to play in the quarter. The Huskies would go quietly from there until the final seconds of the quarter. Lexi Bruno and Hopkins would hit three-pointers on back-to-back trips down the floor to stretch West Chester's lead to five with two minutes left. Boehner would drain a long ball to get the lead to eight with one minute left in the quarter, before replicating the result with 32 seconds left. Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic).
West Chester was able to stretch their lead into double-digits early in the second, before Bloomsburg would trim it down to seven. The Golden Rams would go to the locker room up 45-29. A jumper from Fisher began the second quarter, before a Bruno layup stretched the lead to 13. Montana kept her strong start going with a jumper to get BU back within 11, before
Lauren Oeth (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) got in on the scoring to get Bloomsburg back within single-digits. Another Montana jumper kept the mini-run going to get the Huskies within seven, before completing the three-point play to leave the score at 27-21 two and a half minutes into the quarter. As the clock ticked down toward the halfway point, Destiny Jefferson drained a three-pointer that was countered by a Montana layup to leave West Chester up 30-23 with five and a half minutes left. A layup from Porscha Speller put the Golden Rams back up by nine, before a layup from Jefferson re-gained the double-digit lead for the home team. Corridoni exchanged a layup with one good free throw from Bruno to get the game within 10, before Hopkins and
Payton Spadaccino (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock South) traded layups to leave the difference in double-digits. Another three-pointer from Boehner stretched the lead to 13, before a bucket from Bruno got the lead to a quarter-best 15 points with one minute to play in the half. Inside the final 20 seconds, two free throws from Boehner were countered by a bucket from Mack, before one good free throw from Bruno sent the teams to the locker room.
West Chester would maintain the double-digit lead throughout the entire third quarter, leading by as many as 28 and taking a 24-point lead to the fourth quarter.
Despite the Huskies winning the fourth quarter 18-12, the Golden Rams led by double-digits for the entire duration of the frame to secure the dominant home court win.
As a team, Bloomsburg shot 41.3 percent (26-63) from the floor, just 12.5 percent (1-8) from long range and 41.2 percent (7-17) from the foul line. Three Huskies scored in double-figures in the loss, led by Montana who finished the day with 15 points. Corridoni and Oeth each chipped in 10 points, with Oeth marking a new career-high. Bloomsburg won the battle on the boards 41-33, with Montana and
Darcy Lee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) each pulling down a team-high eight. The eight boards set a new career-high for Lee. Saxton finished with a team-high four assists, while
Marianna Maldonado (Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) recorded a team and career-high three steals on the afternoon.
The win moves West Chester to 15-4 overall and 12-3 in the PSAC, while Bloomsburg falls to 6-15 overall and 3-12 in league play.
The Huskies return home for the first of two games at the Nelson Field House this coming week when they welcome Kutztown on Wednesday (Jan. 31). Tip-off for Wednesday's game is set for 5:30 p.m.
