BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The tenth-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team scored a pair of first-half goals and then held off a late Mansfield University rally to earn a 2-1 victory at Steph Pettit Stadium on Tuesday afternoon in a crucial Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup. With the victory, the Huskies snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 8-5 overall and 2-4 in league play. The Mountaineers dropped to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in the conference standings.
Senior
Tali Wehner (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) scored a goal and assisted on the other for the Huskies, who moved to 49-3-1 lifetime against Mansfield in the all-time series. Freshman
Arden Morgans (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) also scored for Bloomsburg in the victory.
Wehner got the hosts on the board just 2:56 into the contest when she collected a pass from senior
Erica Krebs (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) off of a penalty corner and fired a slapshot past Mansfield goalkeeper Brittany Ryan for her second goal of the season - both coming in the last four games. Krebs picked up her fourth assist of the season. Then, less than 11 minutes later, the Huskies extended the lead to 2-0 when Wehner fired another shot towards the Mansfield goal that was tipped in front by Morgans which beat Ryan for her second goal of the year. Wehner collected her second assist of the season with the helper.
Ten minutes later, the Huskies nearly made it 3-0 when, off of another penalty corner, senior
Jackie Shragher (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) hit the post with a shot from just inside the circle and Krebs pushed a rebound shot just wide of the cage to keep the score at 2-0.
Shots favored Bloomsburg in the opening half by an 8-7 margin.
Mansfield got on the board in the 54th minute when Christie Buyer chipped a centering pass from Irelynd Sullivan over sophomore goalkeeper
Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) for her sixth goal of the season. The Mountaineers kept the pressure on and seemingly tied the match at 2-2 when Gabby Hieber beat Sheply off of a penalty corner with eight minutes left in regulation. However, the officials got together for a lengthy discussion and eventually disallowed the goal to keep the Bloomsburg lead intact. The decision took the wind out of Mansfield's sails as the Mountaineers could not muster a shot attempt the rest of the match.
The Mountaineers held a 6-3 advantage in shots in the second half and edged the Huskies, 13-11, in that department for the match. Mansfield also held an 11-5 margin in penalty corner opportunities on the afternoon.
Sheply improved to 4-4 on the season as she was credited with eight saves in the victory, including five in the second half. Ryan, meanwhile, dropped to 8-6 on the season for Mansfield after her three-save performance.
The Huskies will be on the road on Saturday, October 27, when they travel to Erie to battle the Lakers of Mercyhurst University at Tullio Field. Start time of the match has been moved up one half-hour and will now get underway at 11:30 a.m.
In other news on Tuesday, the Huskies dropped one spot in the latest Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll and are now ranked tenth in the country.
