BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University football team recorded eight sacks, forced four turnovers, and held Millersville University to minus-8 rushing yards as the Huskies won their third straight game by taking care of the Marauders, 38-14, on a cold and rainy Saturday at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium in the final home game of the 2018 season. The Huskies improved to 5-4 overall and finish 4-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings. Millersville fell to 2-7 overall and 2-3 in divisional play.
Prior to the opening kickoff, the Huskies honored their 11 seniors -
Chris Dunford (Colonial Heights, Va./Thomas Dale),
Chris Gary (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood),
Dexter Jordan (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser),
Jake Klinger (Berwick, Pa./Central Columbia),
Travis Krall (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area),
Nate Monroe (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt),
Blake Remensnyder (Lewisburg, Pa./Danville),
Josh Salak (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin),
Marquis Seamon (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge),
Hakeem Sillman (Philadelphia, Pa./Frankford), and
Josh Tripp (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia).
It marked just the second time since the 2001 season that a Bloomsburg team held an opponent to negative rushing yards in a game with the only other occurrence during the last 17 years coming on September 21, 2013 when the Huskies held Kutztown to minus-3 yards on the ground in a 31-12 victory over the Golden Bears.
Gary recorded two of Bloomsburg's eight sacks on the day and, in the process, became the school's all-time career sack leader as he passed Larry Webster who registered 26 career sacks in just two seasons (2012-13). Gary now has 27.5 career sacks in his four-year career with the Huskies. Klinger and freshman
AJ Simon (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) also recorded two sacks each while redshirt freshman
Nahzir Wilson (Philadelphia, Pa./New Foundations Charter) and freshman
Tom Pellegrino (Hackettstown, N.J./West Morris Central) had single sacks on the afternoon. Klinger's two sacks were part of a monster afternoon as he led the Huskies with seven total tackles, four-and-a-half tackles for a loss, two sacks, and a fumble recovery in the victory.
The eight sacks were the most since recording eight, also against Millersville, back on October 1, 2016.
All told, the Huskies held a 337-209 edge in total offense. Bloomsburg finished with 230 yards on the ground - the third consecutive game with at least 200 rushing yards - and added 107 yards through the air. Redshirt junior
Alex Gooden (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara) led the ground game with 16 carries for 88 yards and one touchdown while Sillman chipped in with 65 yards on 15 totes. Redshirt sophomore
Erik Benjamin (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) completed 8-of-18 for 107 yards and one touchdown. Redshirt junior
Michael Allen (Oley, Pa./Fleetwood) caught three passes for 42 yards to lead the receiving corps.
Appropriately, it was the defense that got things rolling early for the Huskies. After a sack by Klinger on the first play from scrimmage, Monroe picked off Millersville starting quarterback Collin Shank on the second play from scrimmage and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown to give the Huskies, following redshirt freshman
Jaco Sattamini's (Delaware Water Gap, Pa./Stroudsburg) point after, a 7-0 lead just 45 seconds into the contest. It was Monroe's first career interception and first collegiate touchdown.
The Huskies added to the lead with 2:20 left in the first quarter when Gooden found paydirt from two yards out to cap off an eight-play, 46-yard drive. Sattamini added the point after to give Bloomsburg a 14-0 advantage. Then, redshirt junior
Qmac Quiteh (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) scored his first touchdown of the season - a nine-yard burst up the middle - with 5:42 left in the first half to extend the advantage to 21-0 following Sattamini's good extra point try.
Millersville got on the board on its ensuing possession with a nine-play, 55-yard drive that culminated with a one-yard touchdown run by Phil Overton with 1:42 left in the first half. Joey Farley added the point after to cut the lead to 21-7. But, the Huskies answered right before the half as they drove 42 yards on six plays with Benjamin finding redshirt junior
Jay Popson (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) in the back corner of the endzone for a six-yard touchdown pass. The drive was set up by a 30-yard return by Gooden on a short kickoff. It was Popson's first touchdown reception of the season and gave Bloomsburg a 28-7 lead, following Sattamini's extra point, as the teams headed to their respective locker rooms for intermission.
The Marauders, again, cut the lead the two scores as Tyrone Gibson got into the endzone from a yard out with 5:38 left in the third quarter. Farley added the extra point to trim the Huskies' advantage to 28-14. The scoring drive was set up by a muffed punt that was recovered by Millersville's Xavier Jenkins at the Bloomsburg 40-yard line with seven minutes left. But, the Huskies' defense held and Bloomsburg was able to break the game open with 10 points in the fourth quarter. Sattamini started the scoring with a 26-yard field goal with 7:03 left in the final period to extend the lead to 31-14. Then, following a turnover on downs, the Huskies got the ball back at the Millersville 34 and, four plays later, were back in the endzone as Benjamin, who powered his way for 22 yards on a quarterback sneak on the previous play, found paydirt from three yards out with 2:58 left. Sattamini added the extra point for the final margin of victory.
Bloomsburg was able to score 17 of its 38 points off of Millersville turnovers. Klinger had the lone Huskies' fumble recovery while Monroe, Seamon, and redshirt
Tyshaun Pollard (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) had interceptions. Seamon tied redshirt senior
Dexter Jordan (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) for the team-high with his fourth pick of the season in the victory.
Justis Jacobs carried the ball 14 times for 12 yards to serve as Millersville's leading rusher on the day. Jacobs, who came on in relief of Shank in the second quarter, also completed 12-of-29 for 175 yards and one interception. Shank was 7-of-16 for 42 yards and two picks. Both quarterbacks were sacked four times. Farley led the receiving corps with five catches for 64 yards.
The defense also finished with 12 tackles for a loss and seven pass breakups - three by redshirt freshman
Logan Yohn (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown). In addition to the season-high eight sacks, the Huskies also were credited with nine quarterback pressures - three by Gary - as the line was in the Millersville backfield all afternoon.
Bloomsburg will be on the road the final two weeks of the 2018 season. Next Saturday, the Huskies will travel to West Liberty University to take on the Hilltoppers for the first time ever on the gridiron. West Liberty, which plays in the Mountain East Conference, is 3-6 on the season following a 46-33 loss to Concord on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff from West Family Stadium is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
