SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University field hockey team put up a strong effort on Tuesday evening but saw its season come to an end as the Huskies fell at fourth-ranked Shippensburg University, 2-1, in overtime in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) quarterfinal match from the Robb Sports Complex. Bloomsburg ends its 2018 campaign with an 11-7 overall record while the Raiders improve to 15-3 overall and advance to play East Stroudsburg in the PSAC semifinals at West Chester on Friday.
Bloomsburg, which snuck into the postseason with the sixth and final playoff spot on the final day of the regular season, dominated the Raiders in the opening half and held a 1-0 advantage at halftime. Junior
Ali McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech) was able to notch the lone goal of the half when she beat Shippensburg goalkeeper Ally Mooney through the five-hole on a rebound off of an initial shot from senior
Jackie Shragher (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) during a penalty corner opportunity. The goal was McKay's fifth of the season and came just 7:25 into the contest.
The Huskies maintained control for much of the opening 35 minutes and were a mere inches away from potentially scoring at least a couple more goals as several Bloomsburg shots narrowly missed being on net. All told, Bloomsburg outshot Shippensburg, 12-4, in the opening half and held an 8-4 edge in penalty corners.
The roles reversed in the second half as the Raiders, the third seed in the tournament, came out firing and eventually tied the match at 1-1 when Jasmin Petrantonio beat sophomore goalkeeper
Dana Sheply (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) for her 20th goal of the season with just over 23 minutes remaining in regulation. Shippensburg continued to pressure but Sheply, who played sensational in goal, was up to the task as she stopped five shots in the second half to help force overtime.
The extra session was back-and-forth as both teams had scoring opportunities and penalty corner chances. But, when the dust settled, it was Rosalia Cappadora who slapped a shot past Sheply off of a penalty corner with 1:36 left in the first overtime to propel the Raiders to the victory. Sarah Womer, who inserted the corner, was credited with the assist.
The game was as even as could be - both teams had 17 shot attempts for the match with the Huskies taking one more penalty corner, 10-9, than the Raiders.
Sheply made a number of big saves for the Huskies, particularly in the second half and in overtime, and finished with eight stops on the evening as her record dropped to 7-6 on the season. Shragher, who was all over the field on the defensive end, was also credited with a defensive save on the day - her third of the season. Mooney, meanwhile, turned aside seven shots for the Raiders to improve to 15-3 on the year.
Bloomsburg wraps up the 2018 campaign with an 11-7 overall record. It was Bloomsburg fourth consecutive season with at least ten victories and the eighth postseason appearance in nine seasons under head coach
Nikki Hartranft. The Huskies will say goodbye to five seniors -
Erica Krebs (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia),
Morgan McAllister (Salisbury, Md./Parkside),
Tali Wehner (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg),
Jackie Shragher (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South), and
Annie Klinger (Klingerstown, Pa./Line Mountain).
