Women's Basketball Falls In Overtime At Holy Family Tuesday Night

HTML BOX SCORE

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Senior Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) scored a career-high 26 points on Tuesday night but it was enough as the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team dropped a 68-62 overtime decision at Holy Family University. The Huskies dropped to 3-2 on the young season while the Tigers improved to 2-2 on the year.

Mack, who was coming off of a 22-point performance in a victory over Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday afternoon, stayed hot on Tuesday as she knocked down a career-high seven three-pointers (11 attempts) and was 8-of-14 from the field against the Tigers. She also grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists in 39 minutes. Her seven triples was one shy of the school record of eight which was accomplished three times - most recently by Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) against West Chester on February 11, 2012.

Junior Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) added 15 points and eight rebounds while sophomore Megan Brandt (Lebanon, Pa./Northern Lebanon) chipped in a season-high 10 points in the loss. The trio combined for 51 of the team's 62 points and shot 17-of-31 (54.8%) from the field. Unfortunately for the Huskies, the rest of the team combined for 11 points on just 5-of-27 (18.5%) shooting.

The game was close throughout as neither team had a larger advantage than seven points all night. The Huskies trailed by one, 12-11, at the end of the first quarter and then fell behind by as many as six in the second quarter before going on a 15-3 run to turn the six-point deficit into a six-point advantage, 28-22, with 47 seconds left in the opening half. However, Holy Family's Megan Hughes hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of the half to trim the Huskies' lead to 28-25 at the break.

Bloomsburg led by six, 42-36, with 1:36 left in the third quarter after a jumper from Brandt before the Tigers scored the final four points of the period to trim the lead to 42-40 heading to the final stanza. Sophomore Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) gave the Huskies their largest advantage of the quarter on a layup with 1:53 left to build the lead to 52-48. However, Molly Masciantonio scored the Tigers' final seven points of the quarter including a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left, to force overtime.

The Huskies went ice cold in the overtime as they made only 1-of-10 from the field with their only make coming on a three-pointer from Mack with 18 seconds left to cut the Tigers' lead to four, 66-62. Holy Family's Katie O'Hare closed out the scoring with a pair of foul shots four seconds later to seal the victory.

Masciantonio led the Tigers with 25 points while also chipping in five rebounds, five assists, and four steals. She scored 11 of her 25 points in the fourth quarter as Holy Family made the comeback to force overtime. Jada Smith added 13 points and 11 rebounds in the victory.

As a team, the Huskies were 22-of-58 (37.9%) from the field and made 8-of-18 (44.4%) from long distance. Bloomsburg, however, was just 10-of-16 (62.5%) from the line. Holy Family was 24-of-56 (42.9%) from the field and was 6-of-21 (28.6%) from beyond the arc. The Tigers were just 14-of-23 (60.9%) from the line.

Bloomsburg outrebounded Holy Family, 42-32, in the game with junior Bella Ricci (Etters, Pa./Red Land) leading the Huskies with nine boards. However, the Huskies committed 17 turnovers to Holy Family's 10 on the night.

The Huskies will return to action on Tuesday, November 27, when they return to the Nelson Field House to host Chestnut Hill College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
