LAST WEEK
Bloomsburg won its fourth consecutive game, clinching the program's 20th consecutive winning season in the process, as the Huskies hung on for a 34-31 victory at West Liberty on Saturday afternoon in the first meeting between the two schools. Redshirt junior running back
Alex Gooden (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara) had a big day offensively for the Huskies as he finished with 16 carries for 99 yards and one touchdown and then caught one pass for a 52-yard touchdown to end the day with 151 all-purpose yards and two scores. Senior
Hakeem Sillman (Philadelphia, Pa./Frankford) added 84 yards on 15 totes and chipped in three catches for 32 yards to help pace the offensive attack. Bloomsburg finished with 221 yards rushing on the day - the fourth consecutive game with at least 200 yards on the ground. Meanwhile, redshirt sophomore
Erik Benjamin (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) completed 11-of-21 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns. The Huskies built up a 34-17 lead early in the fourth quarter before the Hilltoppers made things interesting with a pair of touchdowns in the span of 3:31 - the last one coming with 50 seconds left - to cut the lead to 34-31. However, Bloomsburg was able to recover the West Liberty onside kick attempt and run out the clock to hold on for the three-point victory. Bloomsburg finished with 379 yards of total offense while West Liberty had 364 with 157 of those yards coming on its final two drives as they had to play catch-up. The Huskies out-gained the Hilltoppers on the ground, 221-103, with West Liberty getting the better of Bloomsburg through the air, 261-158. Defensively, the Huskies had two interceptions on the day - one by senior
Dexter Jordan (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) and one by sophomore
Kasean Patterson (Philadelphia, Pa./Lankenau). Bloomsburg also had four sacks on the afternoon to give it 25 sacks in the last five games after having only six in the first five contests. Senior
Chris Gary (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) added to his program record with two more sacks on Saturday to give him 29.5 for his career which puts him fourth on the PSAC's all-time list. Redshirt junior
Alex Annan (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) and freshman
Tom Pellegrino (Hackettstown, N.J./West Morris Central) had the others. Redshirt senior
Josh Salak (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) led the way with seven total tackles. Gary finished with five tackles, three tackles for a loss, and two sacks.
The Vulcans scored 35 first-half points on Saturday afternoon before finishing with a 49-34 victory at Seton Hill in PSAC West action. Freshman Noah Mitchell and sophomore Brian Alsobrooks combined for 325 passing yards and three touchdowns – all to different receivers. Mitchell finished with 175 passing yards and two scores on 13-of-18 attempts with no interceptions. Alsobrooks posted 150 passing yards on 8-of-15 attempts with one touchdown and one interception. Redshirt junior Jordan Dandridge and sophomore Tyson Hill both eclipsed 100 receiving yards and scored a touchdown in the contest. Hill set a career high with 125 receiving yards on just five catches and Dandridge totaled 104 yards on six receptions. Junior Chad Livingston added 89 receiving yards and one touchdown on a team-leading seven receptions. Freshman defensive lineman Gerald Brown led the team with a season-high 11 tackles. Junior London Cloud finished with 10 stops (seven solo), 1.0 sack, and one blocked kick, while redshirt freshman defensive back Darrell Jackson posted six tackles (four solo) and two pass break-ups. With the win, the Vulcans have now posted 15 consecutive winning campaigns - longest in school history.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE
Sophomore defensive lineman
Alexander Findura (Bloomsburg, Pa./Woodland (Ga.)) served in the United States Marine Corps Infantry for four years prior to coming to Bloomsburg. Findura's training and experience led him to become a member of an elite team called the Body Bearers, stationed in Washington D.C.  As a part of the Body Bearers, Findura was tasked with aiding in the funerals of fallen soldiers. During his time as a Body Bearer, he had a hand in many funerals including that of General Mundy. While Findura never deployed overseas, he still took a lot away from his experience and was very humbled by the opportunity. "You think you have it bad, but there's a lot worse going on out there, like what I've seen at Arlington Cemetery."
Findura will be featured on Saturday as part of the ESPN College GameDay coverage of Veterans' Day.
FIVE THINGS TO WATCH
- Saturday's game with California is the 26th in the series between the two schools, dating back to the first meeting 90 years ago in 1928. Bloomsburg has an overall record of 15-8-2 versus the Vulcans, with a mark of 9-2-1 at home, 6-5-1 on the road, and 0-1 at a neutral site (Hershey for the 1984 State Game). The Huskies have won five of the six games played at California since 1972.
- For the 20th consecutive season, the Huskies have a winning record and have won six or more games. The latter is a conference record and the winning streak is the third longest in conference history, behind 31 for West Chester and 22 for Clarion. Bloomsburg's previous school record streak for consecutive winning seasons was 10, set from 1946 to 1955. The winning record this year also came against long odds. This was only the third time in school history a Husky team managed a winning record after having a losing mark through five games. The other two were in 1946 and 2007, which ended with four and five-game winning streaks, respectively.
-
Chris Gary (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) recorded two sacks against Millersville two weeks ago to become the school's all-time leader in career sacks with 27.5. He broke Larry Webster's school record of 26 he set from from 2012-13. Gary added two more in the win at West Liberty to give him 29.5 for his career - fourth-most in PSAC history.
- Bloomsburg has scored at least one point in 183 consecutive games dating back to a 21-0 home loss against Shippensburg on September 13, 2003. The Huskies have rattled off 118 consecutive road games with at least a point dating back to a 30-0 loss at Millersville on October 10, 1998.
- After totaling just six sacks in the first five games, Bloomsburg has 25 sacks in the last five contests and is now 19th in the country in sacks per game (3.10). However, the Vulcans are tops in the PSAC and sixth in the country in sacks allowed as they have given up only six all season.
