Men's Basketball Edges Gannon, 66-62, In Home Thriller Saturday Afternoon

HTML BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Freshman sensation Travis Elmore (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) continues to impress as his layup with 9.4 seconds left in regulation snapped a 62-62 tie and helped propel the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team to a 66-62 victory over visiting Gannon University on Saturday afternoon at the Nelson Field House in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener for both teams. The Huskies improved to 3-2 overall while the Golden Knights dropped to 2-4 on the season.

Elmore hit a foul shot to tie the game at 62-62 with 45 seconds left in regulation and, after a Gannon miss at the other end with 14 seconds left, redshirt senior Darius Robinson-Wallace (Philadelphia, Pa./Delaware Valley Charter) corralled the rebound, found junior Ky Mauras (Reading, Pa./Reading) who then found Elmore behind the Gannon defense with an outlet pass. The freshman drew contact and made the layup to give the Huskies a two-point lead. In addition, the Gannon bench was assessed a technical foul after the play which allowed redshirt junior Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) to knock down a pair of foul shots to extend the lead to four. Elmore missed his foul shot but the damage had been done as Bloomsburg held on for the 66-62 victory in a wild finish.

The freshman finished with a game-high 16 points to go along with eight rebounds, four blocked shots, and three steals in a solid all-around performance. Elmore has now started his collegiate career with five consecutive games hitting double figures in scoring. Mauras finished with 15 points while Saxton chipped in 14 points which included a 9-of-10 performance from the free-throw line. Sophomore Ethan Houston (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) added 10 points, five rebounds, and two blocks in 21 minutes off the bench.

Sophomore Austin Harriott (Philadelphia, Pa./Hun School) led the way in rebounding with 10 to go along with six points, two assists, two blocks, and two steals.

Bloomsburg started off hot as it jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the opening three minutes as Elmore scored five points early while Saxton and sophomore Nicholas King (Easton, Pa./Freedom) combined to add the other five. The Huskies built the lead to 13 on two separate occasions before the Golden Knights began to chip away and, eventually, cut the advantage to five, 34-29, at intermission. Elmore finished with 11 points in the opening half while Saxton had nine through the first 20 minutes.

The Huskies, however, were ice cold to start the second half and, what was a 13-point advantage six minutes into the contest, quickly evaporated and turned into an eight-point lead for the Golden Knights with 12:30 left in regulation after a basket from Kofi Mills. Bloomsburg was held to just 23 points from the 14-minute mark of the first half to the 12-minute mark of the second half. But, then it was the Huskies turn to bounce back.

Bloomsburg cut the lead to one, 57-56, with 5:37 left before Houston drilled a three-pointer to give Bloomsburg a 59-57 advantage with 4:53 remaining. The teams then battled through three ties and three lead changes before the deciding play with 10 seconds left.

The Huskies shot 19-of-47 (40.4%) from the field and 4-of-17 (23.5%) from three-point range while the Golden Knights made 26-of-65 (40.0%) with an identical 4-of-17 (23.5%) mark from downtown. The difference came at the foul line where Bloomsburg attempted 43 foul shots as compared to Gannon's 11. The Huskies did not take advantage of their opportunities, however, as they made only 24-of-43 (55.8%) from the stripe. Saxton was 9-of-10 - the rest of the team was 15-of-33 (45.4%). Gannon was 6-of-11 (54.5%).

Gannon held a 43-38 edge on the glass with 20 of its rebounds being on the offensive end. The Golden Knights were led by Daryl Porter who finished with 15 points. Victor Olawoye chipped in 14.

The Huskies will get right back to work on Sunday afternoon when they entertain Edinboro University at the Nelson Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
