HTML BOX SCORE

WILSON, N.C. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team got a combined six strong innings of relief from redshirt sophomore JJ Spehrley (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) and senior Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) as the Huskies kept rolling with a 6-3 victory over California University of Pennsylvania at Fleming Stadium on Sunday evening. With the win, Bloomsburg has opened its spring trip with two straight victories and improved to 7-3 overall on the young season. Meanwhile, the Vulcans saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end as they dropped to 9-3 on the year.

After two sensational outings to start his collegiate career, freshman Nick Stoner (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) lasted only three innings on Sunday. He struggled a bit with his command but still allowed only two runs on four hits in three innings. He walked three and struck out two. Spehrley came on in the fourth and was credited with the win as he pitched two and two-thirds innings to improve to 3-0 on the season. He allowed a run on two hits, walked one, and struck out four. Warren, meanwhile, slammed the door on the Vulcans for his first collegiate save. He allowed only one hit and one walk over three and one-third scoreless innings while striking out a pair.

The Vulcans jumped on Stoner in the bottom fo the first inning as Eric Fairman came through with a two-run single with two outs to give California a 2-0 advantage. Stoner, who had allowed only three hits in his first 10.1 innings of work, allowed three hits and a walk in the inning but was able to limit the damage.

Bloomsburg got a run back in the top of the second against California starter Nick Riggle. Sophomore Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock Township) led off the inning with a single but was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of junior Colton Hooker (Warrington, Pa./Upper Moreland). Sophomore Chad Cooperman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) followed with a single and then both he and Hooker pulled off a double steal to advance to second and third with one out. Freshman Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) lifted a sacrifice fly to right to plate Hooker to cut the Vulcan lead to 2-1.

It remained a 2-1 Vulcan lead until the top of the fourth when the Huskies scored a pair to take their first advantage of the game. Junior Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) led off the inning with a single and then advanced to second when redshirt junior Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) drew a walk. Krizan sacrificed both runners ahead ninety feet and then two batters later, Cooperman came through with a two-run single to give the Huskies a 3-2 advantage.

Bloomsburg added a run in the top of the fifth when Woelfel singled home sophomore Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) to extend the lead to 4-2. Swiger led off the inning with a double and then stole third before crossing the plate on Woelfel's knock.

The Vulcans cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth against Spehrley as Bill Hitman scored on a sacrifice fly from Austin Logan. Hitman led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single by Bobby Thompson. Warren came on and induced an inning-ending groundout with runners at first and second.

The Huskies answered with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 6-3. Swiger and sophomore Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) drew back-to-back walks to lead off the inning which allowed Shiffer to plate the first run of the inning with an RBI double. Woelfel followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Holmes for the final run of the inning.

Warren finished off the Vulcans, allowing only a one-out single in the eighth and a one-out walk in the ninth for his first collegiate save.

Bloomsburg had eight hits on the afternoon - two each from Shiffer and Cooperman. Swiger scored a pair of runs while Woelfel and Cooperman each drove in two to pace the Huskies' offense. Swiger, meanwhile, swiped two bags in the victory.

The Huskies will take Monday off and then will get their first look at Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division rival, Lock Haven University, on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. from Fleming Stadium.
