BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University football team will begin preparations for the upcoming 2018 season when the annual series of spring practices gets underway at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium on Saturday, March 24.
Â
The Huskies will conduct 13 practices and a scrimmage game over the next three weeks, culminating with the annual Maroon and Gold Game on Friday, April 20. Kickoff from Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium is slated for 6:00 p.m. and admission for all fans is free.
"We have had an excellent offseason of conditioning and we are anxious to get out on the field and start playing football again," said Bloomsburg University head coach,
Paul Darragh. "Spring practices always give us a good idea of what type of team we will have in the fall. We are very encouraged by our preparation thus far and we certainly anticipate an excellent spring season."
The Huskies closed out the 2017 season with a 7-4 record - Bloomsburg's 19th consecutive winning season dating back to 1999. It is the third-longest streak in PSAC history, behind West Chester's 31 (1940-42, 1945-72) and Clarion's 22 (1964-85). The 19 straight seasons with at least six victories, however, continues a PSAC record. Bloomsburg has now posted a winning record in 23 of the last 24 years.
Bloomsburg has the luxury of returning seven All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division honorees, including two First Team members in offensive lineman
Travis Krall (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area) and defensive lineman
Jake Klinger (Berwick, Pa./Central Columbia). Also back in the mix are five Second Team recipients - defensive lineman
Chris Gary (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood), defensive back
Marquis Seamon (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge), wide receiver
Michael Allen (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley), and running backs
Qmac Quiteh (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) and
Alex Gooden (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara).
Klinger, who was just named a Don Hansen First Team All-American on Friday afternoon, had a monster season in 2017 as he led the Huskies with career-highs in total tackles (69), tackles for a loss (22.0), and quarterback sacks (11.0). His 22 tackles for a loss surpassed Justin Shirk's 21.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage during the 2014 season and is the most by a Bloomsburg player in at least 18 years. He finished second overall in the PSAC, and led the PSAC East, in both tackles for a loss and sacks during the 2017 campaign.
Bloomsburg is scheduled to open the 2018 campaign on Saturday, September 1 against Merrimack College at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The full 2018 schedule will be released in conjunction with the spring game next month.
